From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- This picture book tells the story of a deceased grandfather and the way in which his grandson / namesake come to know him through a photo album preserved and shared by the boy's grandmother. The child learns about his grandmother's husband through photographs of forebears dressed in funny clothes, from grandfather's childhood to his own parents' wedding. By the time the boy himself appears in the photo album, grandfather Bill has died. While the sadness is clear, it is dealt with sparingly and as a natural part of the rhythm of life. The elder Bill's participation in a war and his resulting disability is dealt with in equally tactful prose. The role of photographs in preserving precious memories to be passed on to future generations is salient here, as is the familial love. The English setting is often in the foreground, but Johnson's finely detailed watercolors make the characters appear real, although occasionally awkward, mirroring the look of old, posed photographs. The family resemblance carries well through the years, and the overall effect is quaint and warm. --Ruth K. MacDonald, Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, IN
