- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs I mentioned in the review for Volume 1, I've been a fan of Mo Dao Zi Shi for years. This volume has two scenes that, for me, are the most difficult to read:
A: what happened to Xiao Xingchen
B: what happened to Nie Mingjue
I have to say, that excepting Xian Xingchen's story, I've always kind of adored Xue Yang - he's so unapologetically narcissistic with absolutely no ability to feel guilt. And even though I rather hate him during Xingchen's story - after all neither Xiao Xingchen nor Song Lan deserve their horrific deaths. Neither does Ding--overall I still like the guy. I mean, it makes little sense - he's a villain with a capital V, but then it's amazing how the author writes deplorable characters so you like them. Just look at the man villain.
The story of what happened to Nie Mingjue is difficult to read, not because of what happens to Mingjue - though that is awful and points the finger clearly at the big bad guy - but because we're seeing the events through Mingjue's eyes and he was an angry individual due to his saber's spirit. That's an amazing form of writing there where Wei Wuxian and the reader are taken away to the violence of Mingjue's memories.
I have never understood Yao's Jin courtesy name, to be honest. Since Jin children are named with designations due to their generation, technically he should be named Jin ZiYao. The author never explains why she had him choose that name that put him with his father's generation. Perhaps Jin Guangshan wouldn't allow him the honor of using his son's generational name? But that would make it doubly odd that he allowed him to use the same generational name as him. I guess that will always remain a mystery.
Though the main mystery of the story is still to come. I understand why they've pushed the books out to every few months for release, but I love these books and want the rest now. Yes, I could read the online translations, but it's not the same. These books are so much cleaner without all the extraneous words or punctuation other translators put in without an editor cutting them out. I read the first two books in 3 days time. And now I have to wait. **Sigh**
One complaint I have about the editing in both books. The addition of an A to the beginning of a name should only be used in dialogue. After all, it is NOT a part of their name, but part of the address of the individual. So if you're talking to Tong, it would be "A-Tong" or to Ding, it would be "A-Ding". You wouldn't mention them by A-Tong or A-Ding in the narrative. Just Tong or Ding. That did pop me out of the book a LOT. But it does not take away from the amount of stars, because it's not that big of a deal. Most people wouldn't know the difference. It just annoys me, LOL
