Throughout the work, McFeely uses language that belittles Grant often damning with faint praise. In addition, he spends most of these pages focusing on the less savory elements of Grant’s life. Hurrying through the days on campaign in order to focus on his failures. In his epilogue, McFeely states he is merely treating his subject as a man, but his prose clearly paints that man in an unsettling way.
On cannot help but compare to the more recent work of Chernow, who somehow captures both the failures and successes of this unique character. Reading through McFeely, you cannot help but be distracted by the condescending tone.
