I studied graphic design at Pratt Class of 67. I went on to a career in the commercial printing business. Brings me back to an era predating computer graphics. This book could not possibly speak to me in a clearer voice.

This book has impressed me so much I had to write a review. I've yet to see a book with as many fine examples of 17th-20th century typography and printing techniques as this one. The book is filled with exquisite imagery from a variety of design eras and what makes it truly remarkable is the quality of the writing. Each image is thoughtfully captioned and the overview of the progression of the printmaking and jobbing trade is thorough, interesting and never drags on. The production of the book is also top notch; the paper choices and type setting are fantastic. If you love the history of graphic design and typography, you need this book.

This is a very entertaining look at early Type Design and Graphic layout before
the job title "Graphic Designer" was part of the job market landscape. A beautifully-
presented overview of Graphic Design styles and Trends from
early days. Many of the outmoded products being advertised here
are outlandish and hilarious by today's standards.

I bought this for my daughter the graphic designer. She thought it was fascinating. She liked that it was a design book about "pre-design"
