This is a very nice, simple identification book. I very much appreciate the drawings, every grass has at least one page with drawings sometimes of different stages of the life cycle, there is an identification guide in the beginning of the book,and a glossery of terms in the back. I am a beginning grass identifier; this is my first grass identification book and I think it is a terrific choice.

This book has a very brief identification section that will not be complete for the amature. Grasses covered exist in the northeastern U.S. but not in alpine habitats. It does have a large "Species Descriptions and Illustrations" section where some of the descriptions can be too brief and most of the illustrations are lacking. Each species account has a common name, scientific name (may only be to genus), family, brief defining characteristics, flowering period, habitat, and may contain some general notes, which may include information about some species that it could be confused with. Has a very short glossary (next to useless) but has a nice "Habitat Key" that contains lists of common grasses found in certain habitats. A short list of species found during certain flowering times. The chapter entitled "If you do not find something in this book" has some recommended books and also has more glossary terms for the flowers, fruits, leaves and stems, which includes some general labeled diagrams for the grasses, rushes and sedges.

I know what you are thinking, "Who could ever want a grasses guide"? Well, this is one of the few guides that might surprise you! Granted, it is a little dry; however, it does mix interesting information in with the formal explanation of the grass. This guide will let you know what is native and alien as well as potential uses for the plant. Unfortunately, no color photographs grace these pages. Nevertheless, an aspiring horticulturist or master gardener could find this an interesting read. So, if you think hard you might almost kinda' maybe need this guide.

Learning to identify the many species of grasses, sedges and rushes is extremely difficult. This book describes 135 species using parts of the plant that are easy to identify. The relatively small number of species represented in the book (compared to the very large number of species that actually exist) makes it so it's not too overwhelming to key out the species. Drawings of what to look for accompany each species account. If you would like to learn to identify grasses, sedges and rushes, this is the book to get.
