“This is a book that should be in the hands of every activist working on food and farming and climate change.”―Vandana Shiva
A practical, shovel-ready plan for anyone wondering what they can do to help address the global climate crisis
Grassroots Rising is a passionate call to action for the global body politic, providing practical solutions for how to survive―and thrive―in catastrophic times. Author Ronnie Cummins, founder and director of the Organic Consumers Association, aims to educate and inspire citizens worldwide to organize and become active participants in preventing ecological collapse.
This book offers a blueprint for building and supercharging a grassroots Regeneration Movement based on:
- Consumer activism
- Farmer innovation
- Political change
- Regenerative finance
Cummins asserts that the solution lies right beneath our feet and at the end of our forks through the transformation of our broken food system. Using regenerative agriculture practices that restore our agricultural and grazing lands, we can sequester massive amounts of carbon in the soil. Coupled with an aggressive transition toward renewables, he argues that we have the power to not only mitigate and slow down climate change, but actually reverse global warming by strengthening our infrastructure.
Grassroots Rising shows that a properly organized and executed Regeneration Revolution can indeed offer realistic climate solutions while also meeting our everyday needs.
“This is a ‘good news’ instructional book for Regeneration, a plan of action for the United States and the world to transition to climate stability, peace, justice, health, prosperity, cooperation, and participatory democracy.”―Ronnie Cummins

Adapted from the introduction . . .
"This is a book about how we can rise up together and overcome the most serious threat that humans have ever confronted: global warming and severe climate change. . . .
The driving force that informs and inspires our new grassroots revolution is Regeneration, a rapidly spreading, carbon-sequestering, ecologically restorative, technologically innovative, forward-thinking worldview that takes us well beyond the now unfortunately outdated twentieth-century notions of sustainability. Regeneration calls for a transition from degenerative, climate-disrupting fossil fuels to renewable energy and from industrial food, farming, and land use to regenerative practices. . . .
We can draw down billions of tons of excess carbon from the atmosphere into our soils, forests, and plants over the next few decades and thereby avert climate catastrophe. By mobilizing the grassroots power of a united body politic for survival and revival, we can head off climate chaos and build a new nation."
Editorial Reviews
Review
“The world is finally waking up to the ecological and climate emergency and the urgent need to realign the economy with the laws of ecology. In Grassroots Rising, tireless activist Ronnie Cummins outlines how we can address the multiple crises of our time by making a transition from industrial agriculture and food systems to a regenerative agriculture that recycles carbon and nitrogen in forests, grasslands, and farms; reverses climate change; creates healthy soils; and halts species extinction and the erosion of biodiversity. This is a book that should be in the hands of every activist working on food and farming, climate change, and the Green New Deal.”―Vandana Shiva, scientist, environmentalist, social activist; author of Earth Democracy, Soil Not Oil, and Stolen Harvest
“Regenerative agriculture is going to be a key phrase in the decades ahead―and this book will get you in on the ground floor, so to speak. Not much could be more important!”―Bill McKibben, author of Falter
“Grassroots Rising is one of the most important books you will ever read. It shows the existential environmental and health disasters caused by the toxic and degenerative practices of the poison cartels, Big Agriculture, the fossil fuel industries, predator tycoons, and the money manipulators. Most importantly, though, it is a book with good news! It outlines a logical and very achievable pathway for how we can shift from degeneration to regeneration and make this a healthy, fair, prosperous, diverse, democratic, and environmentally robust world for all of us.”―André Leu, former president, International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM); author of The Myth of Safe Pesticides
“Healthy soil, healthy plants, healthy animals, healthy food, healthy people. My friend and fellow activist Ronnie Cummins makes a strong case for how organic and regenerative food, farming, and land use can lead us to a healthier and happier world with a stable climate.”―Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder, Mercola.com
“Grassroots Rising is not only a rousing call to action, but a book that also demystifies the confusing rhetoric about carbon that stops many of us from taking action. Ronnie Cummins, with clear and uncomplicated examples, puts the magnifying glass on the Climate Chaos issue, how it’s connected to farming and land use, and shows us exactly what needs to be done to save life on the planet within the next ten years. If you have been confused or depressed about the future, read this book. It’s time to regenerate.”―Zen Honeycutt, Moms Across America
“The future doesn’t have to be gloomy. In this upbeat call to action, Ronnie Cummins, longtime campaigner for healthy food and land, guides us on a hopeful and pragmatic journey into the crucial upcoming decade. A Regenerative Economy is not pie-in-the-sky; it can be done. We have all the tools we need. And thanks to leaders such as Ronnie, we know what to do. This book is a must-read!”―Courtney White, author of Grass, Soil, Hope and Two Percent Solutions for the Planet

We have a strong Farmer's Market and they enjoyed the book
Unfortunately, I donated to his organization. Next time, I'll have to do more research before I buy or donate.
Full of great facts and a whole new way to look at and build our soil and communities.
I highly recommend to anyone looking for positive solutions to climate change!
I'm all in favor of regenerative farming and don't eat conventional foods of any kind. I'm opposed to industrial farming and CAFOs as well as the massive government interference with subsidies, etc., which divert funds and attention from regenerative farming.
That said, I was very disappointed in this book. I was really hoping he'd make a case for regenerative farming, much like "Sacred Cow", but his entire focus seems to be on implementing socialistic programs as if that is some kind of magic wand. Apparently the historical failures of socialism aren't relevant when considering the end of humanity.
The book was very difficult to finish due to the almost fanatical drumming on the alleged virtues of the GND and assumption that socialism is a panacea.
I gave it two stars for the brief descriptions of how regenerative farming helps build soil health. Reading "Sacred Cow" would be a much better use of your time (link below).
