The Wilbur Award-winning book Grateful is now available in paperback and with an updated subtitle.

If gratitude is good, why is it so hard to do? In Grateful, Diana Butler Bass untangles our conflicting understandings of gratitude and sets the table for a renewed practice of giving thanks.

We know that gratitude is good, but many of us find it hard to sustain a meaningful life of gratefulness. Four out of five Americans report feeling gratitude on a regular basis, but those private feelings seem disconnected from larger concerns of our public lives. In Grateful, cultural observer and theologian Diana Butler Bass takes on this “gratitude gap” and offers up surprising, relevant, and powerful insights to practice gratitude.

Bass, author of the award-winning Grounded and ten other books on spirituality and culture, explores the transformative, subversive power of gratitude for our personal lives and in communities. Using her trademark blend of historical research, spiritual insights, and timely cultural observation, she shows how we can overcome this gap and make change in our own lives and in the world.

With honest stories and heartrending examples from history and her own life, Bass reclaims gratitude as a path to greater connection with god, with others, with the world, and even with our own souls. It’s time to embrace a more radical practice of gratitude—the virtue that heals us and helps us thrive.

“What we have... [is a] utopian book [that] advocates a corrective vision of American society that is desperately needed. It is not impossible to imagine a society based on gratitude. It merely takes courage, creativity, and trust.” — Los Angeles Review of Books

Diana’s warmth, humor, and resilient faith are in full bloom in Grateful—and they’re contagious. — John Pavlovitz, author of A Bigger Table

“In weaving together sociology, psychology, art, religion, and data, Bass has produced an intimate, spiritual case for reconsidering gratitude — one that suggests others’ practices of thankfulness may save us, too.” — Sojourners

“Full of provocative and inspiring ideas... it’s terrific reading for anyone trying to preach or teach or lead a small group in this anxious era in which confrontational voices seem to be surrounding us. This book is an invitation, a pathway forward.” — David Crumm, Read the Spirit

“Invites us to a personal virtue and habit of thankfulness, even as it nurtures us into a deeper spirituality, even as it reminds us of the social and civic implications of taking on authentic gratitude. This simple virtue, when teased out and given some political teeth, can be downright revolutionary.” — Hearts and Minds

“Mixing sociological research with warm personal anecdotes of appreciation for the everyday, Bass examines why individuals find it challenging to maintain a practice of gratitude and reveals how thankfulness can serve as the foundation of a healthy community.” — BookPage

“A fascinating book.” — The Faith Angle

This is a delightful book, chock full of practical information that has already aided my gratitude journey along with wonderful stories that drive the author's points home. I could not originally conceive of how an entire book could be written about gratitude, but I was pleasantly surprised at how rich and deep the content was!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The history of gratitude, the psychological implications, the differing aspects were all truly fascinating. I highlighted a ton of really cool aspects that I had never thought of before.
However, I kept waiting to get to an “application” section that never really arrived. There are only a few pages devoted to practices, and those few are scant recommendations. I totally understand the struggle with the material. We are all enduring the current POTUS with fear & trembling. I guess I just put more hope on finding some good applications here instead of just a brain dump of interesting research.

I LOVED this book! I read it as part of writing my Thanksgiving sermon -- a book by a trusted author from among tons of books on gratitude. It was helpful for the sermon, but more than that -- it was one of those books that as I read -- something shifted within me -- not something big -- but a click -- as if the book turned my internal kaleidoscope, and a new and beautiful pattern emerged -- one I hadn't seen before. Butler Bass's approach is straightforward. She contends that gratitude is both an emotion (a complex of emotions, to be precise) and an action/ethos (a way of living). And, gratitude is both personal and communal. She structures her book along those vectors -- gratitude as personal experience; personal practice/ethos; community experience; community practice/ethos. Along the way, she describes the science that finds connections between gratitude and well-being; she engages Scripture; and she offers some accessible practices.

Here's one of my favorite quotes:

"There is, however, an alternative structure of gratefulness, one that holds out the possibility of spiritual and ethical transformation—that of gift and response. In this mode, gifts exist before benefactors. The universe is a gift. Life is a gift. Air, light, soil, and water are gifts. Friendship, love, sex, and family are gifts. We live on a gifted planet. Everything we need is here, with us. We freely respond to these gifts by choosing a life of mutual care."

This book may save my life or at minimum help guide me onto a path of gratefulness and give me a much clearer understanding of what that means. Not something to take lightly, but practice daily even in the midst of hard times. Thank you.

The first part of the book was really great and helpful but it was clear to me in the second half that the book was written during the 2016 election period. The second half was very unfocused and heavily laden with political emotions - one moment of indulgence in that would have been more than enough, not because I disagree with the politics but because that's not the book I wanted to read. The religious overtones were well balanced in the first half of the book I thought and made it accessible to both those of deep faith and those with more spiritual leanings but the second half got much deeper and a bit more than someone like me who is more spiritual than religious was comfortable with at times.

The insights in this book are definitely needed right now! When I read Grateful, I found the book to be so meaningful and helpful for me personally that I, a pastor, recommended it to my entire congregation. I preached a 5 week sermon series on themes in Grateful as church members read the book independently. This summer we have blank prayer flags in the sanctuary. Each week, parishioners are invited to write what they are grateful for on a flag. As we watch our expressions of gratitude multiply each week, a new spirit of thankfulness is growing within our faith community. Diana Butler Bass' book Grateful has sparked many conversations within the congregation and is helping us find gratitude in a time when many are overwhelmed. Her book is accessible, personal, and contains a perfect balance of poetic storytelling, research to back up her assertions, and practical helps. I highly recommend it!

A thought provoking book on what it means to be grateful what it is & how much we need it & what good it could do for us personally & publicly. The book goes off the rails when her political bias burst forth.

I didn't expect this to be a book that would help me feel hope for a way forward amid the meanness of politics as they have developed in recent (and apparently over many long past) years. While the beginning of the book felt slowly paced and perhaps without purpose, by the time I reached the end I felt uplifted and reoriented toward a grateful future to which I can contribute. Thank you for this timely breath of needed fresh air.

Following her award winning spiritual book called Grounded, Diana Butler Bass has written another wonderful book on gratitude. I read both of these books through the library, but decided that I wanted them permanently in my own collection so that I could re-read them both at any time. This used book arrived in pristine condition several days ago. Kudos to the seller! Very pleased with this purchase.

In a time when we all seem to have so much to complain about, Diana Butler-Bass brings us her personal transition from grumpy to grateful. The Bible is full of exhortations towards gratitude and a grateful disposition because God is good and always good towards us. We have our eyes cast down so long we fail to look up and see! "O tase and see that the Lord is good!" sang the Psalmist.
Blending personal experience, sociological and psychological insights and advice with an over-arching faith that whatever it looks like, "all shall be well; all manner of things shall be well" as the mystic Julian of Norwich wrote. Thank God for this book!

This is a well written and encouraging book. There is a difference between a cognitive knowledge that everything we have been given is a gift and actually consciously naming the things we are grateful for on a daily basis. This book has encouraged me to name those blessings. Thankful to the author - being grateful does make you a more contented person!
