About the Author

MeiLin Miranda writes fantasy and science fiction set in Victorian worlds. Her love of all things 19th century (except for the pesky parts like cholera, child labor, slavery and no rights for women) has consumed her since childhood, when she fell in a stack of Louisa May Alcott and never got up.

MeiLin wrote nonfiction for thirty years, in radio, television, print and the web. She always wanted to write fiction, but figured she had time. She discovered she didn't when a series of unfortunate events resulted in a cardiac arrest complete with electric paddles ("clear!") and a near-death experience. She has since decided she came back from the dead to write books.

MeiLin lives in a 130-year-old house in Portland, Oregon with a husband, two teens, two black cats, a floppy dog and far, far too much yarn. Find out more at meilinmiranda.com.

You might have heard of the oscillation machines used by doctors during the Victorian era to relieve 'female hysteria'? Huge clunky machines known as 'manipulators' (now known as vibrators) were used by doctors on 'hysterical' women in an attempt to calm them and solve innumerable ailments. (No doubt, doctors became suddenly more popular during the Victorian era.)

The author takes this oddity from our history and plants it into a world of priests and priestesses, where the priests seem to want to profit from the machine, and the priestesses are only too happy to be experimented on.

The truth is famously stranger than fiction, and in this case, taking a strange occurrence from our own history and putting it into a fictional world has created an excellent starting point for an intriguing novel.

Another great story from Tremontine. I love Anda Barrows so much. In fact, I think I have to put together an Anda Barrows outfit for the next Con! If you like Miranda, you'll definitely like this story. As usual, not nearly enough. More! I want more! :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and was saddened when it ended. The story is intended for a mature audience, and is very stimulating. I enjoy Meilin Miranda's writing style and look forward to reading more of her writings. I highly recommend this book and this author.

A very...arousing...look at a solution to "feminine derangement", as it were. Some friends from The Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom, as well as new folk. Well written and amusing, and well worth the read. I shall be reading this over and over.
