Review

As the coach of a successful program, I feel most grateful for the many opportunities I have had over the years to influence the lives of numerous student athletes. The Gratitude Factor provides me many insights into and personal understanding of the gratitude I feel. This book offers a wonderful overview of gratitude s role in fostering healthy living and life satisfaction.

Using a blend of psychology and theology, Charles M. Shelton studies the nature of gratitude and its benefits in his book The Gratitude Factor. His exercises, practical strategies, and personal reflections, assist the reader to internalize gratitude as one of “life’s essential ingredients.” (P.ix) He writes that there is no more enjoyable topic to discuss than gratitude because it promotes positive growth and healthy development. (P.5) Thankfulness, Shelton contends, will wake up the reader’s mind to the goodness that exists in the world and in oneself. Those who wish to reap the benefits of a grateful life must first face the barriers that prevent spiritual and psychological growth. (Stress and fast-¬paced lives)
As a popular book, it does not have a thesis; however, I felt his examples and explanations were good arguments for the benefits of gratitude. At first, he asks the question “Why study gratitude?” He answers that gratitude enriches love, relieves stress, and reduces our selfish desires. In the second chapter, he uses the life of St. Ignatius Loyola to illustrate the effects of gratitude in one’s personal and spiritual life. He then examines the nature of gratitude and gives practical ways in which to grow in this virtue. In the last chapter he supports this by introducing Jesus as the model of God’s gratitude. He speaks of an interior transformation that takes place when one adopts Jesus’ attitude of obedience, love, and acceptance of suffering. In this way, the virtue of gratitude brings about a transformation of who we are and leads us to “live a holy life.” (p.165)
Shelton’s research is very comprehensive. It can be used as an introductory text for scholars to study the theology of encounter.

This book is not just for reading, but for experiencing. The Spiritual Exercises are profound and powerful tools for awakening to a transformed way of being in the world.
This is a book that I will continue 'mining' from for a very long time and I do recommend it to everyone whose life I touch as a massage therapist and whose hearts open to me as their Life Coach.
If you are the sort who wants to let go of the blocks to Love's awareness, you will most probably benefit from reading and practicing from this book.

Shelton's thoughtful and practical treatment of the theme of gratitude in human affairs draws attention in a down-to-earth way to a fundamental aspect of human being that often is ignored or neglected in our consumption driven, what's-in-it-for-me society. Having learned to maximize returns, we no longer perceive how what we have been given is at the root of all we achieve. We owe the author a debt of gratitude.

Dr. Shelton's book is an important and useful guide to creating a place for gratitude in your life. It is a wonderful, practical application that is very useful for personal development. I find the exercises both clear and immediately useful. I have found no other books in the area of the psychology of gratitude that provide the tools for developing positive, thoughtful state of mind that are elucidated in this book. It is one of those books you are sure to use over and over for its insights and instructions.
