As a popular book, it does not have a thesis; however, I felt his examples and explanations were good arguments for the benefits of gratitude. At first, he asks the question “Why study gratitude?” He answers that gratitude enriches love, relieves stress, and reduces our selfish desires. In the second chapter, he uses the life of St. Ignatius Loyola to illustrate the effects of gratitude in one’s personal and spiritual life. He then examines the nature of gratitude and gives practical ways in which to grow in this virtue. In the last chapter he supports this by introducing Jesus as the model of God’s gratitude. He speaks of an interior transformation that takes place when one adopts Jesus’ attitude of obedience, love, and acceptance of suffering. In this way, the virtue of gratitude brings about a transformation of who we are and leads us to “live a holy life.” (p.165)
Shelton’s research is very comprehensive. It can be used as an introductory text for scholars to study the theology of encounter.Read more ›
This is a book that I will continue 'mining' from for a very long time and I do recommend it to everyone whose life I touch as a massage therapist and whose hearts open to me as their Life Coach.
If you are the sort who wants to let go of the blocks to Love's awareness, you will most probably benefit from reading and practicing from this book.
