The main part of the book looks at gratitude from different perspectives - sociological, psychological, etc. There are also reports of a number of trials run over time to determine how people feel after specific active practices of gratitude journaling compared to people who do other types of journaling. The people who actively practice gratitude all reported feeling happier by the end of the trials, so I decided to give it a go.
The program consists of writing from 7 different perspective of gratitude, one per day for 7 days then cycling through the 7 perspectives again, then once more. I'm about half way through the program and I'm already feeling happier overall. I can identify the perspectives that work best for me, but I can see the value of all 7 of the perspectives.
Journaling about what I am grateful for 10-15 minutes a day is definitely worth the time, since I feel so much better while doing it!

Dr. Emmons, professor of Psychology at the University of California at Davis, presents abundant proof that gratitude does work. These pages are filled with reports and true stories of the benefits of being grateful. It is not a matter of feeling grateful, but of becoming grateful. In the opening pages, he boldly and assuredly states that "gratitude has one of the strongest links to mental health and satisfaction with life of any of the personality traits. . . . Grateful people experience higher levels of positive emotions such as joy, enthusiasm, love, happiness, and optimism."
Developing this important attitude may be done through journaling. It may continue being developed through gratitude letters and visits. "Who are the people who've made a significant difference in your life? If something happened to you tomorrow, would you regret that you hadn't properly thanked these people for their role in your life?" The author's research further presents the possibility of "making grateful kids" . . . "growing gratitude through spiritual disciplines" . . . "overcoming the biggest obstacle to gratitude" . . . and having "gratitude in the midst of grief."
The book ends with a challenge to do seven exercises, one each day of the week, for three weeks. Thus, you complete the same exercise three times during the 21 days.
1) "Three Blessings:" Recall and write down three good things that happened today for which you could give other people some credit.
2) "To Whom and What?:" Focus on those things for which you might be grateful, recalling the source or provider of these things.
3) "The Gifted Self:" Focus on the benefits you have received and, secondly, ask yourself "In what ways might I give back to others as an appropriate response for the gratitude I feel?"
4) Choose something that is ending soon and write about your gratefulness for this past activity, event, experience, or relationship.
5) "The Absence of Blessing:" Think of one aspect of your life for which you feel grateful and then write about how this might never have happened.
6) "The Gratitude Letter:" Remember a time when you were grateful for something another person did for you, and then write a letter of thanks to that person.
7) "Bad to Good:" Remember some bad things of the past, and then consider where you are now.
