In his job as one of the Grim Reapers working in Florida, David, has been collecting souls for over fifty years trying earn his redemption for 'crimes' he committed while he was a soldier in Korea. Over the years David has tried every means available to blot out the tragedy and ugliness he's seen while collecting souls, and has finally settled into a self preserving numbness until the Fates step in and put lovely Sarah in his way.

I thought Grave Intentions was pretty good. For some reason I am sort of a sucker for Reaper Romances - I like the idea of love being even more powerful than Death. And the romance was pretty good, both of the characters are likable and it was entertaining to see Sarah, who has used logic and reason as a shield against the woo woo stuff that runs in her family as she learns to see the world in a different way and as she helped the jaded Reaper lose some of his 'grim'ness. There are also some interesting players in the background making up the rest of David's fellow Reapers.

For a story that keeps on bringing the reader in contact with deadly situations, the story had just a touch of gruesome but no overt gore in describing the events which precipitate the need for the Reapers to do their pickups (I am sort of twisted but I could almost picture a Dead Like Me thing going on but I guess that would have erased the hero's need to detach from his job and his newbie apprentice's plight as well.) I did have a minor nit with the story in that thought that there were holes in the way that what was going on at Sarah's work ties off, but despite that Grave Intentions was still a decent b-list read and since Grave Intentions is the start of a series, I will have to keep an eye out for the next 'Grave' novel which has lady Reaper, Ruby, in the lead.

I'm a sucker for books about death gods and grim reapers -- stemming, I'm sure, from my fascination with the myths of Hades and Persephone. So books like the Charley Davidson and Alex Craft series... I suck them down like candy. Thus did I have high hopes for Grave Intentions, a recent release from Lori Sjoberg. I'm delighted to report that those hopes were well met.

It's a fun quirk of plot that David and the other reapers have to conduct their work without being seen or found out by regular people. I'm used to such characters being incorporeal and/or invisible with a wealth of secret superpowers. These reapers, in contrast, are remarkably mundane. Sure, they have a few upgrades, but upon first blush they come across as largely human. If one ignores the fact that they're dead. They bleed, eat, get their eyebrows singed off... er, you'll see when you read it. This approach is definitely different from its brethren out there in the world. In many ways, this is more fun. Instead of swooping in on a cloud of mysterious, inky shadows, David and crew have to creep about like repo men, taking care of business with none the wiser. Yes, definitely more fun.

The characters are another high point. For example, our leading lady Sarah has a nice, realistic feel to her. It makes her an appealing protagonist -- easy to relate to, to invest in. David, meanwhile, maintains a wonderfully grumpy demeanor that adds a bit of zing to the play. (I dislike affable heroes; Boy Next Door does not do it for me.)

The relationship between Sarah and David is remarkable in its lack of melodrama. There's an initial spark of attraction, a growing connection, the inevitable union... You can really feel the development of their feelings for one another.

David Anderson was a soldier on the battlefield on the verge of death when Fate intervened, making him immortal to serve Death himself as a Grim Reaper. David is destined to usher lost souls to the after life to atone for his past mistakes. The life of a reaper has finally taken its toll on him, leaving him broken and jaded, until he meets his neighbor Sarah Griffith, a scientist who spends her days in a lab, working on a cure for dementia and evenings visiting her eccentric grandmother. Just when things are starting to look up for David, Fate comes knocking, asking him to make a difficult choice that puts his newfound love in danger.

Grave Intentions is a fun and sweet romance that brings two lonely souls together with some unexpected and unfair hurdles to overcome. David is a tortured hero (my favorite) who is given a second chance, one that comes with a price of losing his humanity to all the violence and death he sees in his line of work. Reapers are sometimes portrayed as heartless, but that's not the case with David, his pain and emotions are clearly felt through the pages of the story and inspire compassion.

Watching David play the big brother role to his new trainee Adam, shows a playful side he often keeps hidden and the dark humor only a grim reaper could possess. He's the perfect dose of an alpha, he's honorable and protective but not in a suffocating way. Sarah and David's personalities are evenly matched and while there's no lack in chemistry, I wanted more of a spark between them to love them more, just my opinion.

Sarah is a smart and sassy leading lady that is instantly likeable. She is practical, outspoken and independent, so it was a lot of fun to watch her interact with David, epecially when she discovers the supernatural world around her.
