Lisa Jacobs is a girl who finds her father horribly murdered. Since she's still a minor, has no mother, and her estranged older brother is fighting drug abuse and is unfit to be a guardian, she is sent to live with a distant uncle she's never met. He runs a massive funeral home and cemetery in a place called Grand Hollow. As soon as she arrives, strange things begin to happen. Ghost sightings among the graves, the weird, creepy mortician, and the realization that Lisa is being held against her will.
I normally love horror, the scarier the better. But in the words of Stephen King: "if I can't be scary, I go for the gross-out." That's what this book does. It builds up suspense with a good amount of scares and disturbing scenes, but in the end, it just kind of falls into the gross-out. There are a lot of disgusting, horrific scenes of cannibalism. And not zombie cannibalism either-real live human cannibalism. There was a point when the book stopped being scary and just went for gross. Fans of Edward Lee and other extreme horror writers will appreciate it.
But all in all, I liked the story. I'm glad I read it. And I would recommend it.
I liked the character of Ned, who is perhaps the only true innocent in the book, but I found it a little hard to believe that he would remain so blindly loyal to Grand Hollow, even after everything he learns. If I was Ned, I would have been gone long ago, *&$% the job. There's other jobs.
But it is a unique, one of a kind book, with lots of twists and turns that I didn't expect.
this is not the type of book I read but I could not put it down It is very well written many surpises around every corner love the characters you never now what was going to happen next creepy and a mystery and even shocking sometimes and there's ghosts and did I say creepy . I really did like reading it and I think you well too
Lisa: “Because I’m trapped . . .”
I received the book because I nominated it through the Kindle Scout program. This is not only a winner in the program . . . it’s also a winner of a mystery. I loved the book. The characters are complex, the setting unique, and the chapter headings (like Pork Rinds and Liver Pate, two foods you don’t normally find paired) are fun.
Well, you have a young heroine who sometimes is just like a normal teen, with a friend that was sometimes bold and sometimes a little bit slow minded. A bunch of suspect characters that, in the end, are very innocents and some others that aren't so.
In a pair of words: buy it! If you like thrillers and paranormal stories, this is the one you must read!
This book blew me away! It's so wonderful to have a fresh take on a classic genre. I adore ghost stories, love a good mystery and have a never ending affection for big creepy houses and anything paranormal. This book included all of these things (sort of), but did it in such a vibrant new way, I was hooked!!! I think I have a new favorite author to add to my list. Thank you!!
