Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy is a history of the Confederate guerrillas who-under the ruthless command of such men as William C. Quantrill and "Bloody Bill" Anderson-plunged Missouri into a bloody, vicious conflict of an intensity unequaled in any other theater of the Civil War. After many years, Grey Ghosts is still a great introduction to the Civil War in Missouri

For students of the Civil War, the conflict in Missouri has always been a bit confusing. The state itself was a patchwork of loyalties that literally split families, towns, counties and regions. Dr Brownlee is somehow able to sort through the complex political fabric of a state at once garrisoned but also protected by the Federal troops. At the same time while hosting the horrors of the war as prosecuted in the border zone between Kansas and Missouri the nature of warfare changed and evolved in ways still recognizable in today's conflicts around the world. In spite of that ever present duality within Missouri, life went on for many citizens.

I have always wanted a synopsis of the western edge of the Civil War, and this book lays it out beautifully.

The mayhem that took place in Kansas and Missouri, before, during, and after the Civil War is far more interesting than the war itself.

It was also interesting to learn that atrocities committed by union soldiers initially sparked this incredible mayhem.

Excellent for a better understanding of the civil war in the west. All high school students should read it. Just the facts and does not take a position. I have read a lot of books on the civil war era and to understand the issue you have to know the mentality of the area at that time. It is just me but I need better maps to follow the action.
