in 1998 Paramount remixed the Grease film soundtrack for it's 20th anniversary. That mix was very poorly done, adding/changing lots of sound effects, background vocals, and altering the sound of everything. Some dialogue and sound was removed and there are many mistakes in music editing and mixing. The songs themselves sound flat compared to the original mix. That is the only version of the soundtrack that has been available since 1998 and has been used on every DVD and Blu-ray release.
Fans have been loudly complaining about this for 20 years and now Paramount has FINALLY gone back to the original 1978 sound mix for this release. They used an original 1978 6 track Dolby mix to create the new 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix on the new blu-ray and 4K discs. The new mix is also on the new iTunes digital version. Beware that the Amazon digital release is NOT the new version as of today.
The restored mix sounds fantastic. The songs sound BIG and have a punch that was missing from the terrible 1998 remix. This is the version of Grease that everyone fell in love with in 1978 and for the first 20 years of TV and home video versions.
Paramount also scanned the original camera negative for a completely new remastered picture. I have only seen the new iTunes version, but the picture is definitely improved in terms of color. Reviews state that the 4K version looks really good but I haven't seen it yet.
Regardless of the picture, the SOUND is what matters on Grease. And they finally got it right. Paramount hit it out of the park. So be sure to get the NEW version of the blu-ray or 4K disc that is released on 4/24/18 to get the new and greatly improved restored soundtrack. iTunes has the updated version now, but Amazon has not updated their digital version yet.

Product Description
John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

No need to talk about this happy and fun musical for lovers of Grease. For those who have consistently upgraded from VHS or CED to Laser to DVD because they truly love this musical, does the 40th anniversary release offer incremental video, audio or supplements? At the reasonable price point it is definitely worth it.
1) audio track is much richer and more dynamic. The lip syncing issue discussed by some is on both editions as the actors recorded their songs in the studio.
2) video quality is much brighter, clearer and detailed. Perhaps too bright since perspiration on faces is accentuated and shiny, and makeup on women appear too red at times. Even guys during the dance scene have reddish tones to their cheeks.
3) the main extra was the substantial documentary on the origins of the musical in Chicago at the Kingston Mines theater starring Marilou Henner.
4) the 16 page photo album is a nice touch.
This phenomenon of a musical is deserving of the very best treatment for collectors. It is one of those rare movies which I have consistently upgraded, and one of the few I can watch over ad over and derive as much pleasure the 20th time as I did the first. In short....it is worth the upgrade.

I am no going to review the quality of the movie, if you are reading this you already love it. I pre-ordered and kept my fingers crossed the Grease 4K would be a improvement in terms of picture quality ("PQ") over the Blu-ray and I was not disappointed. PQ is astounding and there is much more detail to be seen over the older Blu-ray versions. There are some shots that are simply soft or a bit blurred in the background that is inherent with the original picture quality and only stand out as a result of more detail. Thankfully they are few and far between. If you are on the fence and aren't quite sure if the 4K is worth it, take a chance, I found to be a great improvement over the Blu-ray

It's nice to see this is an actual "remaster" and not just a picture upgrade. I've always wondered what was "wrong" with the music and now I know. I opened this film in the summer of 1978 at the movie theater I was managing in my hometown. I knew NOTHING about this movie except it starred two people I had never been interested in before. I looked out the door that night and saw a line stretching around the block and was shocked, I figured this film would come on go in a week and be forgotten - musicals weren't really "in" in the 70's. Boy, was I wrong! We played the movie to sold out crowds for weeks in a small town, in the summer, with NO air conditioning - just a swamp cooler (very old cinema).
Couldn't help hearing the music and liking it more and more - finally got a chance to see it myself and fell for its catchy tunes and fun vibe. Later when I bought it on video and/or dvd I could never put my finger on it but something sounded different - now I know that the soundtrack for these early videos had the music altered before release. The sound now is pure and just a delight to hear all over again in its original form. If you love this film you need this 4k release or at least the new DVD remaster.

This review has nothing to do with the actual film. Unfortunately this review has to do with the product itself. After purchasing the film due to its unique 40th Anniversary Edition look, I assumed it was slip on or Velcro flap, completely covered case. That is not so. The film is protected by cardboard-like material that has no way of closing. My issue with this is the slipping out of the digital code flyer that comes inside and also the eventual wear and tear of such a brittle material for a movie that will be stacked and stored. The inside has nice printing of images from the film but the booklet is held together by staples. Again, the materials feel brittle and the fact that the booklet is attached to the front cover will cause it to tear if not handled careful. I collect movies and I can say that I’m disappointed on how this case was cheaply made.

It’s a book/flap, not a “real” case

Review on the UHD Blu ray of Grease
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2018Verified Purchase
I wasn’t too sure if it would be really worth the upgrade of this movie to Ultra High Definition , But my am I glad I did as for a movie that 40 years old the UHD transfer is just amazing bringing the movie right up to date and still as good now as the first time I saw it on its official release.
If your wondering is it worth purchasing this on the UJD format I would highly recommend it A+++++

'Rockin Edition' has a different version of the movie soundtrack - avoid!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2016Verified Purchase
The 'Rockin Edition' has a 'doctored' soundtrack and many of the songs sound very different - and not in a good way - the vocal is very loud, less tuneful, and the music is less harmonious and much more in the background.
I bought this Blu-ray version believing that it was the original soundtrack but only with instant access to musical numbers as a special feature - not a different version of the songs (the different version is also in this version of the movie soundtrack). I should have read the relevant reviews first!
Big disappointment!

WOW! This is how you should re-discover grease
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2018Verified Purchase
A very, very well engineered new release of grease. Sound is excellent and picture is not comparable to any of the previous DVD releases. If grease was your thing and you got the equiptment to play back UHD bluray, this 40 year anniversary release is a must!
