1. The cover art is, euphemistically, not the best. And that's the only art you get. You do not get cover art for each individual book.
2. It is a big, cumbersome book, inadvisable for use on bus or subway. It is also cheaply made, with paper covers and thin pages that make it hard to keep the book from bending as your read.
3. There's no table of contents that allows you to flip to the page number for the particular Tarzan story you want. If you want to get to the beginning of the fourth book in the series, you have to guess at its location. You'll probably guess wrong; then you'll need to guess again, or thumb through pages.
If you were to try buying new copies of each of these eight Tarzan books, you may see the total price creeping up toward seventy dollars, or much more if you want vintage editions. Whereas, you can probably get a new copy of this "Great" book for twenty to thirty dollars. But if you succumb to the cheap, second option, you will be getting something that is cheap.
Here's the beginning of a way toward a better alternative: Do a search here on amazon for TARZAN OF THE APES Ballantine. Bring up the hit that shows Mass-Market Paperback and Kindle Edition. Click the "+" for Mass-Market Paperback and highlight 1979. At the time of this writing, on the list of sellers' offerings I see that for about five or six dollars, including shipping, you can get a decent used copy of TARZAN OF THE APES with Neal Adams artwork. It is a small and manageable book, and it has a proper table of contents. It is pleasing to look at, pleasing to handle, and pleasing to read. Once you get into the story, you won't mind the crease on the spine or the moderate scuff marks. For your money, you have gotten something that is good in all respects.
Don't sell yourself, or Tarzan, short by buying poor quality.
I'm 79 years old.. It's not supposed to have this kind of hold on me. Jeez!
Burroughs is a master and you will find yourself engrossed and entertained by an absolutely original character for hours - just a marvelous read better than any of the new stuff out there yet does not feel dated
the book binding and size I thought were just fine. I bout it for 27$ at amazon and mine has held up well. Its just a great deal and if you dont beat up your books seems to be just fine. I like having all 8 books together in a massive tome - but maybe thats just me
