Product Description

THE GREAT CHICAGO CONSPIRACY CIRCUS Feature film 83 minutes color The film is a courtroom comedy, first acted out in the courtroom by the Chicago Seven defendants, particularly Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, the judge, and defense witnesses Allen Ginsberg, Country Joe McDonald, Arlo Guthrie. (There are others characters - among them, Thomas Jefferson, Alice in Wonderland, The Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts, all part of the "cuttingly hilarious" (Newsweek) laughs) Its zany comedy uses word for word transcripts from the Chicago Seven trial to face down the national tragedies of the anti -Vietnam war demonstrations, urban riots, assassinations, which end in the riots in Chicago at the Democratic convention. The whole country, not just the Yippies and hippies, but concerned young people across the nation were caught up in the movement, for or against. The movie shows this intense and yet hilarious event very directly, because it was filmed at the time by people who were there, and passionate, as well as deftly funny. It wasn t only Vietnam. These same people were also working to defend the environment, and against racism one of the accused, until he was shackled and gagged in the courtroom and then separated from the trial, was Bobby G. Seale, the Black Panther. At the premiere of The Great Chicago Conspiracy Circus in the huge Chicago Theater in 1970, crowd lines went around the block, forcing extra showings, which eventually led to jammed screenings at Cannes and Berlin (where it won the Berlin Film Festival Jury Prize).

An often briliant whirligig of burlesque, vaudeville and straight documentary... a cuttingly hilarious parallel between the events of the Chicago trial and the marvelous courtroom scenes in Alice in Wonderland. --Newsweek

Topical, funny, and frightening. --Variety

Imaginatively fashioned, deftly acted, amusing, moving. --New York Times
