a fascinating look at the history of the modern EU

Booker and North have done yeoman work in exploring scores of original sources related to the modern European Union. Most impressively, they have returned to the 1920s, when the contemporary notion of "European Union" began. They note that an element of deception has been present since the very earliest years of the project, demonstrating that the idea's early exponents believed that their utopian ideals, whilst admirable, ought to be realized without the knowledge or participation of the member countries' peoples. In fact, Booker and North reveal that a strong tendency of the strain of Unionists which created the present Brussels regime has been to shun democracy by creating a supranational authority with no meaningful accountability to the people, whilst simultaneously subverting individual states' national sovereignty. A thoroughly absorbing and fascinating read, one essential for anyone interested in contemporary European politics. The defeat in France and the Netherlands of the EU constitution has not rendered this book irrelevant; indeed, it provides a warning about the accumulated power of a body still very much in being and still very zealous to reach the consummation of its endeavors.

second time I've bought this book (loaned one out, or gave away) an excellent documentary on the EU from its inception to Britain joining to the constitution of the Blair era. forensically researched excellent piece of work. Was later followed up with the Great deception, can the European Union survive. which continues the story beyond the failure to ratify that constitution. pro or anti I seriously recommend this book if you have any hope of understanding the argument.

A new insight into the EU. Even those politicians in favour of membership were not satisfied with it, and it's direction of travel was never even to *their* satisfaction. Needless to say those not in favour of membership were far less satisfied (or apoplectic). The EU seems to have been far more important to most of the politicians in the whole of the last forty years than most people realised. The general public just haven't been kept fully aware of what has been going on. If everyone had been more fully aware of everything EU then the apparent sudden change of direction in 2016 would been less likely. The change would surely have been earlier and more gradual.

As Peter Hitchens said on TV every MP should read it but also every UK citizen. Very boring I guess as it goes through years of deceit. Ted Heath did not even read the 3000 page document just released by the EU at the time because it was not in English. France and Germany made their own separate treaty which frames all their decisions. France achieved getting most of its foods subsidies paid by the UK. UK citizens suffered increased food prices as the EU cannot compete with the Commonwealth. UK Prime Ministers did now we were giving up all our rights but kept it secret. After three years of payments the EU asked for a higher payments above what was planned for ten years before. The EU can change any rules or payments anytime it wishes.

A powerful insight into the who's whys and wherefores of the EU. It can be very heavy going; very little detail of any obscure treaty is left out.
But it shows the depths of deception practiced on the British people from the start of our involvement with the European "project"; deception which still continues to this day.
It explains why so few people in the UK know much about the EU, and why our political class is keen that they should go on knowing so little.
Because the truth about the EU, and the truth about how our politicans have behaved over the last fifty years is far from pleasant.

You just don't know ANYTHING about the real workings of the EEC/EU and the systematic, wilful deception of the British public, by civil servants and senior politicians of both parties going back nearly 50 years until you have read this book. Essential reading if you want to make an informed decision about Brexit, whatever side you think you are on.
