Editorial Reviews

This is the fourth collaborative album between iconic metal vocalists Russell Allen and Jorn Lande. The new album, entitled THE GREAT DIVIDE sees a major change in their formula since songwriting and production is now in the hands of former Stratovarius guitartist, Timo Tolkki. After the success of the initial trilogy, a fresher musical direction was needed to move to the next logical chapter and certainly this album offers fabulous songwriting and as usual some incredible vocals from the two amazing singers.

Russell Allen is the singer of the American Progressive Metal band SYMPHONY X, who have received accolades such as Best Progressive Power Metal Band Worldwide or awards for the Best Progressive Metal Album of the Year. Russell Allen also sings for the more straight ahead hard rock/metal band, Adrenaline Mob. Highly rated MASTERPLAN vocalist and solo artist, Jorn Lande has vocal capabilities that are world class, distinctive, rich and spanning a truly impressive range. He is in high demand and has appeared as a guest or sung for such bands and projects as AVANTASIA, ARK, THE SNAKES and many others. He is also a well-known solo artist.

I have been following these guys for awhile. I originally got into Symphony X (miss these guys), then Russell Allens solo work, and finally the Allen Lande albums. This album is strong, and it does not seem to have any filler. Just a little caution though, some of the songs feel like classical music composition, set to heavy metal, hard rock albeit. But if you are a fan of progressive rock and metal, this should not be an issue. Standout tracks for me include "Come Dream With Me" "Hymn to the Fallen," and "Reaching for the Stars."

Recommended for fans of rock and metal, and especially progressive music. I would also suggest you check out the other Allen Lande albums, along with Russell Allens solo work, Adrenaline Mob and any of Jorn Landes solo work. They are all solid.

When I found out that Timo Tolkki was writing the next Allen Lande, I was nervous. Magnus Karlsson writes very enjoyable music. The singers don't really seem to be trying to outdo anyone, and it feels like they enjoy the art of singing as a result since they aren't singing high pitches all of the time (see Kiske-Somerville as well). Once you get used to it, the music starts growing on you. His music has a really unique, wonderfully magical sound

Now enter Timo Tolkki. Tolkki is well-known for his writing on early Stratovarius albums. Some of those songs are still classics of power metal today. However, he can make really strange music. Luckily, this has got to be one of the best works I have heard him write. It seems like Jorn Lande also shared some writing duties on this album, which would explain why some of the songs utilize the voices so well.

This album has a powerful sound in contrast to the first three. I like it. There was something missing in a lot of Tolkki's post-Stratovarius work. These songs are high-quality and polished.

Update: don't buy this if you are only looking for a lyrics book. I really wanted one, and the CD I got was not in a jewel case. Luckily, this is an awesome enough album, but it was a huge bummer

This new album takes a different tack than the first three. On the first three Magnus Karlsson was the music master, playing guitar, bass, and keyboards as well as doing the songwriting. This time around, Magnus Karlsson is nowhere to be found. Instead, Timo Tolkki takes over those duties. I was a bit apprehensive going in on this album because of this change. But my fears were groundless. Nothing and no one on this album disappoints. This an excellent hard rock meets heavy metal album. There are three great melodic songs, "Down from the Mountain," "Lady of Winter," and "Reaching for the Stars." Of these three, Allen & Lande collaborate on the first and then the second one is Jorn's and the last one is Russell's. (At least to my rock-hardened ears.) This is pretty much the way the whole album plays out, with each these two great vocalists divvying up the singing. Another example is the ballads, "The Great Divide" and "Bittersweet." Jorn is on the former and Russell is on the latter. Overall, a great collaborative effort and one that I hope continues.

What an awesome collaboration ...Allen, Lande, and Tolkki. The latter as all musicians and sitting in the producer seat makes for one of the greatest sounds that I've heard in many many years...Top notch!!!...Carl

It's been four years since melodic metal project Allen-Lande last released an album (2010's The Showdown). Russell Allen has been active in Symphony X and Adrenaline Mob in the meantime, and Jorn Lande has released several solo albums since then, so a lot of fans thought this series of albums had run its course. Instead, Frontiers is shaking things up a bit with the Allen-Lande formula. Guitarist/songwriter Magnus Karlsson is no longer involved. Instead the reins have been handed over to none other than ex-Stratovarius mastermind Timo Tolkki.

Tolkki is something of a controversial choice for the Allen-Lande franchise. Not only is his own recent history somewhat checkered, but fans are used to Magnus Karlsson's songwriting approach. Still, when you have vocalists of this caliber on board, you have to give the album the benefit of a doubt.

As it happens, The Great Divide is a worthy continuation of the Allen-Lande project. Tolkki turns in ten very well written and executed melodic metal songs, and his production job is (thankfully) much better than his recent Avalon albums. As you might expect, there's a strong Stratovarius vibe to these songs, and there are moments (see: “In the Hands of Time”) that you can tell a song was written with Timo Kotipelto's vocals in mind. Speaking of vocals, both Russell Allen and Jorn Lande turn in the kind of powerhouse vocal performances we've come to expect from them. Allen has been noticeably more aggressive vocally on recent Symphony X albums, so it's good to see him in a more melodic role, and as fun as Jorn's solo albums are it's a nice change to hear him belting out someone else's songs.

There are really no duds on The Great Divide. Tolkki kept it to ten good songs and didn't load the album with filler.
