Toxic levels of lead

I submitted this review to Amazon on 7/27, but apparently it was taken down without notifying me. I resubmit this now for those who wish to be informed about the lead in this product, absent the external links which Amazon will not allow

The agency for toxic health and disease registry (ATSDR) cites the following for drinking water: The EPA Lead and Copper Rule has set drinking water standards with two levels of protection [EPA 1991; EPA 2000b].

Action levels for lead of 15 ppb and copper of 1.3 ppm in more than 10% of customer taps sampled. An action level is the level for enforcement.

Great Lakes states that their product has: "1.5 ppm" (note that is parts per million as opposed to the parts per billion mentioned in the previous citation).

As a billion is 1000 times greater than a million, if you convert to the EPA standard, which is 15 parts per "billion" for an "action level for water", Great Lakes says their product has 1.5 parts of lead per "million", which, if you convert the million to billion standard, means there would be 1500 parts per "billion" of lead in this product, or one hundred times the 15 parts per billion EPA "action level" for lead in drinking water.

FIVE STAR PRODUCT BUT NOT ON AMAZON

I’ve been using Great Lakes Collagen for a long time because it really helps my joints, 100 times better than glucosamine for me. I’ve also seen significant improvement in my post-menopausal skin, hair and nails. I’ve found it to be super user-friendly...a large spoonful immediately and fully dissolves in my morning coffee (with a little creamer) and doesn’t affect the taste or consistency at all.

This is the first time I purchased GLC from Amazon and, honestly, it’s been a bit alarming. The product is different, maybe cut with fillers to increase profits? It doesn’t easily dissolve but instead clumps and leaves sticky, foul tasting lumps in my coffee and an off-putting foam on top. The after-taste is very unpleasant.

Amazon used to be trustworthy but over the past couple of years I’ve been victimized several times by substandard knockoff products selling as the real deal. Maybe that’s the case here. I HIGHLY recommend this particular collagen product but caution you to buy it elsewhere, direct from Great Lakes or even Walmart online.

I ordered this on a whim because I've been dealing with gluten intolerance and was suspicious of leaky gut. I also thought the benefits of better skin, nails and hair would be great. I've been going grey since my twenties and blamed it on genetics. About six months ago I decided to embrace the grey and cut my hair short. I admit it's been a shock to me and other people. The first picture here is prior to taking the gelatin. The second is today after two months. My hair has BLACK steaks in it again and the rest has gotten darker and thicker. I first noticed it about a month ago and it's changing daily. I had NO idea this was even possible. I don't know if it will continue to darken to what it was when I was a child but it's pretty cool regardless. I will post future pictures of it continues to get darker. Also my skin and nails have improved dramatically.

5/23/17. The third picture is about seven months into the gelatin. It's hard to tell in this photo but my hair is continuing to get darker. I have a LOT of black hair now. The texture is great and I haven't used conditioner in months. I'll continue to use this :)

Let me tell you a little about what I have been dealing with first for anyone else that this might help...
-I have 120 lbs to lose
-I have had 3 severe knee injuries(ironically from working out)
-because of the knee injuries I also developed a calcified cyst on the back of my heel as well as Plantar fascitis
-battle with low thyroid, insulin resistance and PCOS
-incredible joint pain when going up and down the steps and walking any distance

After 2 weeks on GL Collagen I have noticed the following changes
-first I began sleeping all the way through the night which NEVER happened before, and this was after two days of taking it.
-after a week and 3 days on it I was able to get right out of the bed without any pain and walked down the stairs like a normal person...you don't even know what a huge thing this is!!
- I have been able to exercise everyday without needing to take 3-4 Advil EVERY night due to knee pain.
-I have had increased energy, not the crazy kind but the steady kind that you are supposed to have
-I have been able to kick the sugar habit and have the energy to learn and cook healthy food.

So, to sum it up, this has been a huge blessing to me. I will never not take this product. It has allowed me to be on an even playing field to fight the battle against obesity. I will do a follow up after a month on the product. Hope this helps those that struggle with the same issues I battle.

I buy this, mostly, to add to my old cat's wet food (he's 15). Ever since I've been giving him collagen he seems to be less stiff and more lively (runs around and plays more with the younger cats). I will also sometimes add some to my tea, but since I consume bone broth often enough (I follow a paleo/keto way of eating, due to a lot of food intolerances/allergies)... it's not really necessary.

I don't purchase Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate from Amazon anymore, since I can get it for $29.99 (CAD) from Natura Market (a Canadian website similar to Thrive). Very good product, would definitely recommend (and have already done so, countless times).

Took 2 tbsp (as the label directs) dissolved in my smoothie everyday for a week and that was all I could stand. Diarrhoea started right after I started taking it and after a week I have to stop taking it by direction of my doctor. My doctor said that if it’s produced cheaply it can contain too much bacterial endotoxin which causes bloating, stomach upset and is just generally bad for your stomach.

I see no difference in my nails, they still look like there are ridges, but they are growing faster, as is my hair, not thicker though, which would have been nice. I use it as another way to get protein, and also supposed to repair leaky gut, we shall see!

This product is definitely not tasteless. I mixed it with water the first time I tried it, and it tasted pretty nasty. It didn't dissolve at all and was very hard to drink. The second time I mixed it with room temperature mango juice. The taste was less noticeable but I had to keep stirring with a spoon because it doesn't dissolve, it clumps quite a bit actually. Two tablespoons twice a day is a lot and it's very hard to commit to taking this supplement on a daily basis when it doesn't even dissolve in most drinks. I'll probably try another collagen product.

I tried in in yogurt, and while the taste was mostly covered up, it changed the texture of the yogurt. I'm going to try it in a smoothie, but am not optimistic.

I mix it in hot water and add some juice to it to make it palatable. I am kosher so this is a blessing. I have searched for something comparable here in Canada and up until not have not. The price was good since I paid about the same dollar amount when I first ordered it but it was in USD which means it was more expensive once the exchange was factored in so this is a better deal.
