Great Nursing Assistants: The Resident's Perspective
In a series of interviews, actual residents in long term care describe what they feel makes a great nursing assistant. They explain how it feels to know that a call bell will be answered quickly; how much they appreciate food containers opened on a food tray; and how good it is to know when they’re in pain, some one will make sure they get help. They appreciate looking good and are grateful for the nursing assistant who respects their choice of clothes and helps with lipstick or combing hair. Of equal importance, they describe how meaningful it is to them when someone takes the time to know them.
In search of new relationships, the resident appreciates someone who cares about them, learns about their past life and their families. Although all nursing assistants have a full care schedule, it’s amazing how some are able to find a few minutes each day to listen and share. This is the gift of a great nursing assistant.
