The Great Outdoors has been my favorite "summer family vacation" movie for the last 30 years. I've seen it many times and I always get a laugh. If you grew up taking these cheesy wilderness getaways that always resulted in a little too much togetherness you'll love it. The people giving it one star because it's "inappropriate for kids," or "cheesy and cliched" are just big sticks in the mud. You just don't get movies like this anymore. Nowadays, the only options kids have is either sanitized overly censored crap or filth. No in between. This movie is closer to reality than anything I've seen on screen in decades. At least the reality my friends and family experienced The fact that people can't relate to it goes to show how fractured and damaged the family unit has become in modern America.
WHOLESOME ENTERTAINMENT -- CORNBALL FUN AT ITS BEST -- ( America's GenXer's were CREATIVE ) ...BEING SHAPED BY A MULTITUDE OF CRISES -- Lived Through It ALL -- (Aids Epidemic, Urban Decay, Oil Crisis, Chernobyl & Space Shuttle Disasters, War On Drugs) - Amongst many other soul-stirring events... EXCITING TIME PERIOD: World's Fair, Bicentennial, Millennium, Space Exploration …. GenXer's watched development of Home Computer, Video Games, Cable TV, INTERNET ... Basically... Born into a world free from any major WAR, hardship or devastation until the later end.... Arguably, low amount of excessive substance abuse (unlike the 60s). Survivalists'.
I grew up watching this movie and was happy to upgrade to blu ray. It's a very reasonable price ($7.50 as I write this) and has a classic Great Outdoors picture and the audio and video are presented nicely. Unfortunately there aren't really any special features, but that's probably one of the reasons it's so cheap. I think the movie is funny and I enjoy watching it in the summer time. If you like John Candy and/or Dan Aykroyd then you most likely have seen this or would enjoy this. It's a great 80's movie.

Sappy as hell, but with real heart. Aykroyd overplays his part, while Candy is the usual Candy. Interesting film in that this is Annette Bening's first "big" role in film. There are several stories going on at one time, and while they are not stellar, they aim for truth. A few big laughs, but mostly chuckles. Yet I like this flick enough to watch it again. And I did.
I have seen this movie a million times, but I just keep watching it over and over. I think its a nostalgia thing for me because it brings me back to my childhood. I remembering watching it on HBO during a summer I spent with my dad where he took me fishing and camping. So I really can relate to this story. Two dads coming together to make new memories with their kids, re-living their childhood through their kids. More so for Johns character than Aykryods who was their to scam his brother in law. The dislike that John Candys character has for Dan Aykryods is the humor that drives this movie coming to the end where in like every good movie they come together for a good old fashion sappy ending. Oscar performances? No, a great family movie your not embarrassed to watch with your kids yeah!
Funny classic movie. The video transfer was decent, not mind blowing but one of my all time favorite movies so I had to get it. I think they could have done a better job with video quality for a blue ray, it's a step up from the DVD though, sound was really nice as well voices were loud and clear. If you see a good price pick it up.
The Great Outdoors is one of those movies you can watch over and over again. It's a great comedy movie and this was the first Blu-ray disk I've ever purchased. Since the movie is old it's probably not the best movie to buy on a Blu-ray disk but it does work. It's kind of like watching an old black and white movie on a modern TV. It will show the movie well but it's not going to improve the quality of the original movie. Regardless of the Blu-ray comments we love the movie for what it is and when there is nothing on TV we like this is a good go to movie.
This is the kind of movie you end up watching at a party at someone's house you don't know well and don't particularly like. Everyone is drinking beer and eating chips and junk in their rec room. No one is talking except to make comments about the babes in the movie.
5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent show.....must see for anyone who loves comedy.

Two of the funniest men to grace the screen. Any 80's children will have seen this. Bought for my daddy as part of a christmas gift. Ordered Wednesday night, arrived friday morning. Day before they said. Excellent service.
Fantastic film, so funny and showcases the highly talented cast, a real 80s gem, however dont bother with this bluray, just get the DVD. There isnt any special features, not even scene selection, the quality was not of bluray standards, very disappointing.

If you love John Candy films or any films with the old Saturday night live guys in you'll love this. I got the bluray copy via Amazon, I was a little worried because it said made in Netherlands but no need to worry. Great transfer and sound, looks like it was made yesterday. Similar comedy to Plains, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck but with Dan Akroid lending excellent support. A classic.
