As of spring 2018 Great River is excited to announce a new line of products, 13 of which are certified gluten free. Great for those looking for wheat free options or specifically for those that suffer from Celiac Disease. With this new line of gluten free products a new and separate facility is utilized. This new facility follows the standards of food safety testing outlined by the Allergen Control Group. This facility is mandated to follow testing protocol that ensures the products we provide meet the strict standards required for Gluten Free certificate labeling.

Stone Ground Milling Since 1975

Great River Organic Milling has been producing quality stone ground flours since 1975. The milling stones are a unique part of the mills history and are made of a red granite stone found in North Carolina. The above image is an important step in mill maintenance, the miller is dressing the stone through the use of a nematic tungsten carbide bit. Dressing the stone will resurface the stone and it’s furrows to in return mill a quality nutrient rich flour that is great for all baking types.

Product Description

Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.

    I’ve purchased five 25 lb bags and one 50 of different grains from this company so far and each has been well packaged with zero damage (No mangled flimsy box full of loose product) and I’m very pleased with the quality of each one. I’d love easy to peel off ID labels for my containers if they read this.

    The only reason I am giving this product one star is because it was very unclear that what I was purchasing was 50 pounds of wheat BERRIES not ground wheat flour. The title used the words "whole grains" but that did not register with me as being the grain in its whole form since whole grain is a fairly common term used on all kinds of processed bread products. This is as whole foods as it gets, folks. It is the WHOLE BERRY. You have to have a way to grind it into flour if you buy this product. There was nothing in the description that used the word "berry" or that this was wheat that has not yet been ground. The description is general as though it applies for all of Great River products. There is mention of some products being "stone-ground" but not which ones. No where in the bullet points does it mention that these are wheat berries needing to be ground. Might be a great product, but I'm not sure if I will ever find out.

    I got a grain mill for Christmas and this was my first wheat berry purchase. It was the best price I could find and the reviews looked good. This came on time and I could hardly wait to open it. The grains were clean and unbroken. The first thing I made with it was chocolate chip cookies. I replaced all of the all purpose flour with the fresh ground whole wheat. I barely noticed a difference in the taste. The texture was definitely different as the grinding wasn't as fine as I am used to but that is my grinder, not the wheat berries. Since my first batch I have used these to make other cookies, pancakes, and muffins. Everything turned out delicious and I feel so much better about using the whole grain vs store-bought all-purpose flour. I will definitely be purchasing from this company again.

    This wheat grain is good and I am pleased with the purchase. There are small black ball-like pieces in the wheat which I do pick out. I contacted the seller and they indicated that they are small seeds from a harmless weed and that it was not necessary to remove them. I am comfortable with the answer they provided, but will probably continue to sort through and discard the small black balls. I am still very pleased with the grain and it makes great cakes and cookies. I would still recommend it to a friend. The four stars is because others may not like the balls in the grain, but I figure if it's organic, you may have to put up with a few small inconveniences like the balls. No problem for me at this point. I will purchase again, when needed.

    We've been buying bulk wheat for 25 years and from Great River since 2012. Their wheat is excellent and we've never seen any bugs. Not sure why so many have written about little black bugs - maybe we've just been lucky, but 10 years seems like an awfully long streak of good luck. I'm sad about inflation - looking back at old orders and seeing 50 lbs for $52 was telling of the state of economics/politics today.
