World class, with a distinctively American flair
on November 22, 2015
It's impossible to dislike Mark Twain and I share in the admiration of millions. The folksy style of humor that he affected conceals a highly educated man with consummate writing skills, largely self taught. He is one of the few authors I cannot read without laughing aloud.
Picking the best ever American author means ignoring a huge range of competing genres and styles, but he has as good a claim as anyone. In fact he was world class, with a distinctively American flair.
Be aware that this excellent selection is far from being complete even as regards the short stories.
