Editorial Reviews
2008 U.S. pressing of the British band's album features one bonus track. The Heavy's dirty, guitar-scorched Hip Hop Soul will lead you into temptation. Hailing from a town in the English countryside called Bath, The Heavy make everything wrong sound right. At the core are Swaby and Taylor, who have known each other for a decade. When they met, the two bonded over vintage Rhythm and Blues and the films of Jim Jarmusch. They soon recruited Ellul (drums) and Page (bass) and began gigging as a four-piece; most recently Hannah Collins joined to round out the sound. Counter.

It amazes me that this band did not receive more recognition. They are one of the few bands that every album is musically diverse. And I don't only mean from album to album but from song to song. They can be soulful, funky or rock a little. It is all here. This is great music. I would have given it 4.5 stars if that were possible. They have a unique sound that is hard to match. I definitely recommend this album.

I saw The Heavy at Gearbox's Borderlands 2 launch party in Dallas and was blown away by their performance. I immediately went out and bought all of their CDs.
Great Vengeance & Furious Fire is a good album. I can listen to the entire CD without skipping a song. However, I think there's only one big hit on this CD, which is Colleen. The others are fairly average to me. The two other albums (The House That Dirt Built and The Glorious Dead) out at the time of this review's writing have at least 3 hits on them.
That being said, this album is well worth your money!

After getting turned on to The Heavy I am pleased to report that every one of their albums are solid quality. Despite digging back into their catalogue there isn't any particular decline in their musicianship. Moving forward in their collection, there doesn't seem to be any sign of them exhausting their creative vein of sound and style.
On "Great Vengeance and Furious Fire" all but "girl" (which harkens more to Tricky) are foot-tapping big-swinging quality rock tunes. If you liked their other albums, get this one. If you like this one, get their other albums.

Heard the song "Colleen" on the soundtrack for Mad Money and thought, whatever that is, whoever it is, I must find it and own it! That's probably the best song on the album, but the whole thing is outstanding. So much better than the garbage maundering out of the radio airwaves these days. If you like 70s funk you'll love this updated twist on it--like listening to Sly and the Family Stone with a garage band backing them. Amazingly catchy tunes, real melodies, scrungy guitars, great drumming, this band has it all. You won't be disappointed.

you MUST check this album out. for fans of 70s funk and the latest indie rock. its heavy, steamy, passionate, funky, upbeat and rhythmic. i see funk making a HUGE comeback based on this group. i defy you to not move to track 2 "Colleen" or 4 "That Kind of Man".
this band hails from Noid, England, and their music has flavours of gnarls barkley, danger mouse, james brown, sly and the family stone, cee-lo, bootsy collins, and more.

When I first ordered all their available albums, their songs weren't featured in a gazillion commercials, etc yet but now they are. How you like me now? Especially. But truth be told, that's only one of their so many awesome songs. This is not their best record though, The House that dirt built would be my fav probably and second place would have to go to The Glorious Dead. But this is still an awesome band and a very good album.

Glad I grabbed this one from back in the day, it was the only Heavy not in my collection. If you are a fan of the band, it's exactly what you wanna' hear.

I grabbed this album after listening to The Glorious Dead and The House That Dirt Built, so I was kind of working backwards chronologically. GV&FF doesn't quite have the same spark that the subsequent albums possess, but it's still a really solid album; there isn't a lemon in the batch, and if you enjoyed their other work then this is a must-have. If you've only heard their more popular "How You Like Me Now?" or "Short Change Hero" I'd suggest you grab one of the albums first, and work your way back to this one.

If you like music that is a little different to the norm this band is right up your street, after purchasing The House That Dirt Built I was hooked, they go from really funky sounds to jazzy like tunes, one word for them AWSOME.
The more I listen it just gets better and better Brukpockets Lament is one of the best songs I've heard for a long time.

Great Album

After hearing the band's music in various trailers, TV shows and movies, I had a quick look for them online. Listened to some of their songs on YouTube, and decided to buy their albums. This is a great debut album, although I think their follow up albums 'The House That Dirt Built' and 'The Glorious Dead' are even better.

Rating for the album rather than the posting and packaging. I have listened to all of the Heavy's Albums and this one just falls short of the other two you could get.
