Basically, these folks are unable to provide the primary purpose for which they exist because of bureaucracy. After my father had to ditch this device and find his cell phone to get help, I called to find out what happened. It became a smorgasbord of explanations about company policy, established procedures, and training manuals. They couldn't just call the local EMTs when my father needed them because policy dictates that they ask 254 questions before taking any action. When you've just fallen and broken your hip, you don't have time to discuss what you had for dinner, if you are conscious, whether or not you have a pulse, if you wear contacts, and more irrelevant questions. You just need them to get someone out to you. What was most baffling in all of it, was that after my father hung up on them in frustration, no one called any of the emergency contacts that had previously been established. I have no understanding of how this could happen.
I suspect there are a whole slew of corporate executives and lawyers, who have created this morass, who could explain to me how all this makes logical sense if you first place your cranium firmly inside your rectum. I would advise you against participating in this exhibition.
When I contacted customer service, I did request a review of the incident. They are supposed to contact me back and let me know what they find. If it is of any relevance to the nature of this review, I will update it afterward.
Update 3-11-15: The only thing I have heard from the company is the comment (below) they posted in response to this review. No one contacted me to report what they found after reviewing the specifics of the incident involving my father. I was told they would contact me within 24 to 48 hours after my request. That was about two weeks ago. Of course, I have since cancelled my account. Another reviewer mentioned that you can cancel the service and still use the device to contact your local EMS. If you are going to use the device, this is what I recommend. I believe you have to push the button and hold it for five seconds to use this feature. You can browse other reviews for more on this.
My relative was at home alone, fell and could not get up. It may sound trite and melodramatic, but if you're the person who has fallen, if is frightening - as it is to a relative many miles away.
The first thing I checked about 5Star is which cellular network they use.I asked on their Facebook page and had an answer within two hours. Verizon. Had they used Sprint, I would have moved on.Sprint currently has the worst network of all the carriers - and I'm a 12 year customer of Sprint. Sprint is awful.
I ordered the unit and tried it out. It works flawlessly. Follow the graphic instructions and you are up and running within a few minutes. The online registration is simple and gives you the opportunity to provide special instructions, such as the location of keys so emergency service responders don't have to break down doors and such.
5Star technical support which I called primarily to test it was readily available and well schooled, not only on the product, but network operation as well. 5Star customer support was quick to answer as well. Fortunately we have not had to use the 5Star in an emergency situation - and I frankly hope that remains the case.
The GPS is phenomenally accurate right down to the street address. I suspect they use nt only GPS but cell tower triangulation as well.
5Star recommends that the battery be charged every night and I agree. You never want to have a dead battery on this kind of device.
By the way, you can use this unit not only for summoning emergency help, but for less critical situations as well.
Overall, I am please with unit and am very glad my relative has it. Makes me feel that he can summon help when he needs it, no matter where he is. Well worth the modest purchase price and monthly service fee.
We like it because unlike other alert devices, it's like a very simple cell phone - speak directly into the device. Unfortunately they didn't design it very well so we had to improvise to get it on a lanyard. On top of that, this one is not waterproof, so you cannot use it in the shower.
BUT, there is a new model SPLASH - it is supposed to be waterproof, and it looks like you can attach a lanyard to it, too.
We have tested it, and the call center staff is generally good, but sometimes they ask for your name, sometimes they answer right away with your name, etc. (I wish they would rectify this, because the device is in only ONE person's name, so why shouldn't they know who is callling?) The GPS is not exact, but it's pretty close and will get the ambulance in the general area.
I wish I could return our backup one and get the SPLASH, but it's past the return date.
