Editorial Reviews

Small book packs a lot of power.
By Robert Beaman - special to the Rocky Mount Telegram

Every page of
The Greatest Church in the World, is gripping. This sounds like an odd description for the story unfolding behind the serene, watercolored lighthouse on the cover. But this small book packs a lot of power. Using a fascinating story line, Skip Carney reaches into the heart of the church experience and paints a beautiful picture. A picture which reveals a true church in that everyone is engaged and excited to be a member. Everyone shares an enthusiasm and a love for their church that is so compelling. He describes a church that is truly a lamp on a hill.
"It was black and white time," writes the author. "That time just after dusk, but before dark, when all the color is gone from the landscape. It was black and white and Kevin was three hundred and forty-seven miles from home." The scene is eerie. The reader begins a journey with the protagonist into the unfamiliar. Carney begins this journey in darkness, so that as he introduces Ten Beacons - the guiding principles of church success - Kevin and the reader are brought into the light.
Carney uses this theme of light throughout his book. Pastor Kevin finds himself at the Lighthouse Church. He finds lighthouse emblems hidden in details of his journey. He is a pastor who has lost his spark after two failed churches. Kevin is far from home when he enters the Lighthouse Church. He meekly implores God for guidance, hoping the Lord will understand if he quits the ministry for good.
A fellow pastor and members of the local community introduce Kevin to the Ten Beacons that saved the Lighthouse Church. These guiding principles are Carney's masterpiece. Each beacon is a building block to a true church in which its members are involved and an integral part of the community. Beacon by beacon, Kevin's passion for ministry reignites.
The most encouraging part? These beacons are practical, succinct and applicable to any church, anywhere. Carney wants us to be great. He wants all of our churches and communities to be The Greatest in the World.
"Humans add. God multiplies." Carney pens. And as his book events add up, God is multiplying the effects these Ten Beacons add to the world.
Carney seems an unlikely character to pen a book on the church. He is a business owner. A marketing professional who has never been involved in church operations. He calls himself a "concerned observer" who wants to see the church return to the center of our community experience.
The Greatest Church in the World is the new handbook for the modern church," says Martin Newby of LoveServes International. "At Love Serves, we have taught the principles in this book to more than 2,500 pastors. Now, we will use this book as a guide to teach and train pastors, church leaders and church members."
Buck Jacobs, author and founder of C12 Group, says "This book describes the church I  have sought for more than 45 years."

From the Author

The Greatest Church in the World is a story of hope. It is for the "churched" as well as the "unchurched". It is for those who are deep in the Bible and for those who are searching for meaning and purpose in this life.
My sincere hope is that you will find insight and relevance for your life, your family, and your community. My prayer is that you will discover that spark inside yourself that inspires you to "be the light".Skip Carney

I was born in Miami, FL. and grew up in Statesville, NC. In college, (UNC-Chapel Hill) I studied Radio/TV and advertising. In 1980, I left radio to start a marketing communications agency now known as Carney & Company.

In my first book, The Greatest Church in the World, I talk about the church. What makes a church struggle. What makes a church thrive. The story is told through the experiences of a young pastor who is trying to decide if he is really cut out for the ministry.

My prayer is that this book will bring some clarity and direction to people who want more for and from their church. My hope is that it will inspire church members, church leaders and church pastors to find a way to make their church The Greatest Church in the World.
