I'm puzzled by the 1- and 3-star reviews. one because it's perceived to be full of "alternate" takes and the other because it includes the "wrong" version of his 1957 hit Mama Look At Bubu. Both are wrong. These are the original RCA Victor sides digitally remastered to perfection by Pat Martin, and with detailed, informative liner notes written by compiler Chick Crumpacker.

Harry Belafonte, born Harold George Bellanfanti, Jr. in New York City on March 1, 1927 to a Jamaican-born mother and a Martiniquan father, and who lived with his maternal grandmother in Jamaica from the age of 5 until he was 13, pulled off the impossible in the music world. At a time when many singers found their careers shunted to the sidelines by the advent of R&R in the mid-1950s, he introduced something entirely new to the general North American buying public. Calypso .... de sound of de islands, mon.

He didn't start out that way, however, first recording straight Pop for Jerry Blaine's New York-based Jubilee Records in 1950 with the standard Smoke Gets In Your Eyes b/w The Night Has A Thousand Eyes on Jubilee 5035, although the follow-up Venezuela/Anna Belle Lee (Jubilee 5048) gave a hint of what was to come. Blaine would re-issue the latter in 1954 as Jubilee 5158 to try and take advantage of the fact he had by then chalked up three national hits for RCA.

His first there was the December 1952 # 30 cover of the Jo Stafford 1950 hit Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair) on RCA Victor 20-5051 b/w Shenandoah with the backing of the Milliard Tomas orchestra, followed in March 1953 by the # 19 cover of Gomen Nasai (Japanese for Forgive Me), backed by the Henri Rene orchestra on RCA Victor 20-5210 b/w Springfield Mountain.

I would surmise the producer was TOO YOUNG to know what the original songs from
the 50s & 60s sounded like because what you heard in those years is not what is found on this
RCA? greatest hits box set. I've noticed this to be the trend in artists from way back
into the 50s and 60s. If you want to have the original releases then buy Harry Belafonte's
individual (3) All Time Greatest Hits CDs as Vol. 1, 2 & 3 if they're still available. Luckily
I have these. Lately greatest hits compilations are NOT true to the original recordings
because the producer NEVER heard the songs as a youngster. You would be better
off reading reviews from people who lived in the era when the songs were popular.
It's too bad when a major label like RCA can't find someone to verify the authenticity
of the recordings. You can't substitute alternate takes for the originals.

Roy Szanik
