Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed American singer-songwriter-poet Jewel has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. Since achieving international stardom over 18 years ago, the Alaskan beauty has emerged as a charismatic live performer and a respected songwriter with 10 studio albums and four Grammy® nominations to date. Rhino brings together Jewel's best for her first ever career-spanning collection that includes a single recorded specifically for this release, as well as reinterpretations of two classic hits with guest vocalists: "Foolish Games" with Kelly Clarkson and "You Were Meant For Me" with the Pistol Annies.

Signed to Atlantic Records before she was 19, Jewel has sold more than 27 million albums during her career. Her 1995 debut, Pieces of You, dominated the charts with "Who Will Save Your Soul, " "You Were Meant For Me" and "Foolish Games." Her next two albums - 1998's Spirit and 2001's This Way - both went platinum while introducing fans to hits like "Jupiter, " "Hands, " "Standing Still" and "Break Me. " Jewel switched directions in 2003 with 0304, an album that fused elements of electronic and folk to create a delightfully quirky mix epitomized by the contrast of dance beats and accordion on the single "Intuition, " which became a huge hit single on both the dance and pop charts.

"Good Day" is taken from Jewel's fifth top 10 album, 2006's "Goodbye Alice In Wonderland, " an album on which each song was a chapter in an overarching story. In 2009, Jewel recorded Lullaby at her home in Stephenville, Texas. This best selling children's album - her first of two so far - mixed originals with standards like her stunning cover of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow. " She followed up Lullaby with The Merry Goes Round, which was named iTunes' "Children's Album of the Year" in 2011.

Jewel topped the Billboard country album chart in 2008 with her first country album, Perfectly Clear, which is represented on this collection by the Top 15 single "Stronger Woman. " Her second country album, 2010's Sweet and Wild, included the Grammy nominated-single "Satisfied. "

It blows the mind when you think back that Jewel's debut album, 1995's "Pieces of You", sold over 12 million copies just in the US alone. I'm still hanging on to my copy! I absolutely loved Jewel's early work and sorta lost track of her when she moved on in recent years to country music and later yet to children's music. I had wondered on more than one occasion why there had never been a greatest hits or best of for Jewel's music, but here we are finally.

"Greatest Hits" (16 tracks; 65 min.) is thankfully sequenced chronologically and so we start with the three monster hits from "Pieces of You" (Who Will Save Your Soul, You Were Meant for Me, and Foolish Games). Considering the long shadow of this album, it might have deserved at least one more song from it (such as I'm Sensitive). The equally outstanding 1998 "Spirit" album also gets 3 tracks: Hands, Down So Long and Jupiter (that album, which remains my favorite Jewel album to date, also contains the best Jewel song ever: What's Simple Is True). The 2001 "This Way" album is represented by a fine Standing Still and also Break Me (but in a slightly different mix). From this point on each subsequent album gets only one track: the controversial (but in reality quite good) "0304" album from 2003 brings the hit "Intuition"; 2006's "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" album gets Good Day; 2008's "Perfectly Clear" brings Stronger Woman; 2009's Lullaby has Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and 2010's "Sweet and Wild" brings Satisfied. (As an aside, there is nothing on here from Jewel's excellent 1999's "Joy: A Holiday Collection" christmas-themed album.

I have been a listener of Jewel since 1996 and have attended twenty live concerts since 1999. I have also attended shows of associated acts such as Steve Poltz (co-author of You Were Meant for Me).

Jewel's strengths, in my view, has always been great storytelling and an amazing live voice. You simply cannot imagine how Jewel sounds live, her pure voice, when you listen to the recordings. It is truly phenomenal and oh so unique.

This Greatest Hits collection truly spans her career to this point. To mix it up a bit, there are some radio edits included instead of the album edits. Furthermore, the true gems come in the new recording of You Were Meant for Me and Foolish Games. Foolish games is a duet with Kelly Clarkson. It's a beautiful, striking, new recording. Now, the original recording is not dated in its sound nor is the new recording earth shattering different, but a fun new take is an enjoyable listen.

Finally, the album rounds out with the track "Two Hearts Breaking," a new release from Jewel. Jewel's albums have span everything from great simple folk acoustic, to pop, country, and children's music. No matter the genre of the time, the storytelling has always been great and the sound has always been flooring. Indeed, when live in concert, Jewel's "sound," has never really changed.

Highly recommended collection. Please note, on Jewel's site, there is also a package available with a limited edition Vinyl. Many of the tracks on this album had not been available on vinyl previously.

This album really reminds me of why I fell in love with Jewel in the first place. I have no complaints about the track listing. All the hits are here although a few other not so commercial hits could've been added or maybe some acoustic songs from her MTV Unplugged gig which has yet to be released. I do have one complaint that I have with all greatest hits packages and thats the actual booklet. This booklet just consists of lyrics which have all been included in all her previous cd booklets. A nicer retrospect with chart positions and original release dates would've been nicer. Or pictures throughout her career...idk someting other than lyrics. Boring and probably cost effective for the record label but I digress.
The new songs are awesome and so 90s Jewel in my opinion. Jewel, back when she was saying something important, back when her songs had great melodies, and memorable choruses. Jewel before she went country and started singing lullabies. Lets be honest a lot of people probably stopped listening at that point. I want original Jewel and these new recordings are in my opinion original Jewel. If the New song Two Hearts Breaking is any indication of whats to come from this woman my hopes are extremely high. I hope Jewel leaves the country genre....Her album 0304, which everyone panned is in my opinion better than her country albums. I would just like to say welcome back Jewel. And Kelly Clarkson on Foolish Games in pure genious. Thier voices are beautiful together...

I did not know that much about Jewel's music except for the country songs she has done. And to be honest I didn't like this album as much as I thought I would. But it's not bad. Her country song Stronger Woman is my favorite song on here. Good Day is next it is also a country song. And she does pretty good on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. The rest of the songs are good. Just not really my style.
