It's a shame that one of the best honky tonk singers who was ever around is almost forgotten today, this CD being the only release of his material available at this time. I have a complete collection of old Mel Street Recods (LPs) in my collection, be sure there is much more great music that is worth listening.
But no doubt, this collection is great and probably a good start for serious lovers of traditional honky tonk and ballad Country to get a little deeper into this music.
No wonder that George Jones names him as his faborite singer, Steel Guitar legend Lloyd Green (who actually played on all those records!) calls him "Greatest Honky Tonk Singer of all Times"! Find out yourself!

There will never be nor has there been a man with his talent. The first time I heard "Borrowed Angel" I was hooked. I just purchased a 45 that has never been played of that song. He NEVER received the recognition he deserved and that hurts me so deeply. I don't know what happened that fatal day, and now it doesn't matter. All I know is he's gone forever except in my memory where infinity is his legacy.Other fans e-mail me @ gse02116@wvnet.edu as I would love to remember and reflect with those who truly care and appreciate his talent.

One of these days there will be a definite collection released on Mel Street. Until then, this will have to do.
This is a budget line release with no info at all. No song or artist info is included. Plus I don't really like the inclusion of stuff like "Bad Leroy Brown" when I know there are better songs somewhere in the vault.
But for what it is worth, all these songs are original recordings, and the sound is acceptable.
But like I said, one of these days, there will be a deninate collection released, lets just pray it is soon.

I grew up in McDowell County, WV,and knew Mel from a distance, but knew more of the members of his band. And believe me, Mel was the real deal, and I truly believe the world of country music loss a great deal of exceptional talent when he killed himself. Those who never heard of him, or didn't care to...try it. If you don't hear real, true country...so close to what George Jones and the late, great artists like Lefty Frizzel offered...then you really don't know country at all. Listen to Mel, and you'll get a full, well-rounded picture of what country is SUPPOSED to sound like.

Mel Street was my cousin. I haven't even really listened to his music untill the last few years or so, and I do have this CD. I have always loved country music, and I think that Mel did not recieve the recognition he deserved for the time he spent in country music, he inspired alot of people, from Sammy Kershaw, to being close freinds with George Jones. If you like real country music, you'll really enjoy this CD, and recognize a song that George Straight redid, called "I met a friend of yours today" Enjoy! John Street

I heard Mel Street for the first time--not as a country music fan--in 1977 in Cannelton, Indiana. I fell in love and have spent the last 23 years looking for his album that has Smokey Mountain Memories on it. During those 23 years, I have remained a hard and fast country music fan. You can't beat that sound and Mel Street was one of a kind.

Mel Street was a uniquely talented artist, with a healthy respect for tradition, and a soulful style matched only by George Jones and Lefty Frizzell. This is real country music, as opposed to the pre-packaged sound-alikes who seem to dominate the field today. This compilation of classics is sure to please fans of genuine country music. Get this one, and you will never stop enjoying it.

Mel Street was truely one of the greatest country music singers ever. I can remember when I listened to his music everyday even though I was only a young teenager at that time. Today's country just don't have the same sound. I really miss the good ole country. Mel Street is classic country. He really brings back the memories just listing to him.
