How far would you go to see how far your relatives would go if you were rich & they thought you were dying??....this is the basic plot to this film & it is so funny because all of us have relatives like these, most of us probably have at least one rich relative that everyone is jealous of or can't wait to die, Kirk Douglas is a hoot as Uncle Joe who it seems takes delight in watching his relatives not only suck up to him, but also try to one up each other to win his favor, the late Phil Hartman is a blast as the worst of the bunch who along with the rest gets quite upset when Uncle Joe introduces his new live-in younger girlfriend, Olivia D'Abo (Conan The Destroyer) who is eye candy no doubt, thinking that she might get the inheritance, they bring Danny (Michael J. Fox) into their twisted scheme, it seems that Danny has his own life with his girlfried (Nancy Travis) & doesn't really want to be a part of this scheme, but him & Uncle Joe have always been close & he too begins to get tempted by sudden wealth, suddenly it becomes a battle of will as everyone gets greedy with Uncle Joe just watching & wondering who really cares about him, Abo & Fox's verbal confrontation is funny & Hartman never lets up as the instigator of the bunch, him threatning Abo that people have accidents is funny because you know he is nutty enough to do it, or his & Fox's fight toward the end, I think we all know someone like Hartman's character, Hartman takes this character & just has a field day here & the surprising twist at the very end is funny but manipulating, I think the reason this one didn't do better was beacuse too many people might have been reminded of themselves, the things people will do for an inheritance is quite too real & this one is one good cautionary tale about the joys & pains that wealth can bring to anyone who is rich.

One of my ultra best comedy movies that I have ever had the privilege to watch. And I never get tired of watching it - it's brilliantly cast & hilarious; how they all try and throw each other under the bus just to be Uncle Joe's favourite right before he pops his clogs. But little do they know....
There are so many memorable one-liners too = "I'll give him a right good one!", I'll make it matter" - "When she's through with him, they'll be nothing left but a smile and a old hat".

Money makes everyone greedy, even the most non-materialistic. Completely under-rated, Don't miss it!

I first saw this movie a good number of years ago and managed to get hold of a sell through VHS copy from Blockbusters (it was not widely available for some reason). Loved this movie the first time I saw it...and the second..and the third. Now that VHS is almost redundant and my copy long time gone I was hankering for a good comedy to add to the collection and this one came to mind. Make no mistake, this ticks quite a few boxes for solid entertainment. Good family viewing..which is often code for 'not that good' I admit, but on this occasion it is one of the exceptions to the rule. It is funny, heart warming, drama. Kirk Douglas shines as the self-centred tyrannical head of the family intent on making his potential heirs jump through hoops to 'prove' their worth to be in his will. Michael J Fox plays a believably likeable nephew who nearly 'sells his soul' but for the efforts of his grounded girlfriend. There is a moral tale at the heart of this comedy that eventually delivers the feel good factor. The comedy shines through. It would probably never have been on any film critics short list but is is worth a look...and another...and another. Great twist in the tale on the first viewing. Well worth more than its current value, which is probably less than most rental fees. You can't go wrong.
