For those who enjoy learning about Las Vegas history, most of what is out there revolves around either the Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel story (original Flamingo) or else the Chicago mob's control of the Stardust (as portrayed in the movie Casino with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci). This Green Felt Jungle book, written in the early 1960s, was at the time a current-events exposé. It names names, gives dates and places, and goes into extensively researched detail about how Sicilian and Jewish mobsters worked to control gambling and other organized crime. Definitely worth your time if you are interested in how Vegas came to be Vegas. Note: The authors are NOT sympathetic to The Mob in any way. They are not on the bandwagon of those who glorify mobsters. PS By the way, this book is how author Susie Berman discovered that her father (David Berman) was a major crime figure. Until this book came out, she honestly believed Daddy was a legit hotel owner.

Very dated book in which the material has been much better expanded upon in mass media in general since its release. I wouldn't put this on a list of must read mafia books, but would certainly put it on a list of books that are worth a look. The first chapter reads almost Hunter-esque. A very sarcastic and often funny screed on the hustle of "gaming". Beyond this, the book gets a little too detailed. The material might be interesting to a southern Nevada native familiar with the names of semi-crooked politicians, cowboys and goons that were around Vegas in the mid 20th century, but most other readers will find themselves skimming and using the index to find relevant names we recall from Bill Kurtis documentaries on A&E.

First read this book back in the early 1960's - it was the first book to blow the lid off the Criminal Underbelly of the America's premier gambling resort. A very courageous publication for its time. I first read this book as a library book and it began a lifelong interest in this period of American history.

I have looked out for this book over the years, and was delighted to see it re-published in its original format, just as I remembered it.

Many books have been written about Vegas and its links to the Mafia,Show business and the Politics of America, for me this is the first and the best.
