Written by Denny O'Neil, pencilled by Neal Adams, and inked by Dick Giordano (except for one page in #81 and the entirety of #84 by Berni Wrightson when Giordano was sick with the flu), this series pits the title characters as polar opposites: one is politically conservative and the other quite liberal, and they are as often at each others throats as they are various nemeses, often the embodiment of burning issues of the day: racism, slum lords, drug deals and addiction, women's rights, overpopulation, corporate greed, cult leaders and brainwashing, the ecology, and even a Christ figure (published in #89 at the height of the Jesus movement amongst the hippie generation in the U.S. and Europe).
While often dated, the stories are always heartfelt and passionate, and Adams' and Giordano's art is in top form. This series won many awards in its time, and was reprinted numerous times in paperback form as well as in comics, culminating in this trade paperback anthology. One short Green Arrow story, a backup feature in GL/GA #88 written by Elliot S. Maggin and drawn by Adams, retains the emotional tone and social relevance of O'Neil's scripts.
It is even more remarkable when one considers that while Neal Adams was drawing this series he was simultaneously pencilling the Kree-Skrull war in for Marvel in the Avengers #93 - 96 (with Tom Palmer on inks). How he was able to keep characters "on model" in two different series populated by heroes, villains, and a supporting cast with very distinct features, physiques, and costumes is a staggering feat for even the most disciplined professional in the comics medium, aside from spending time with family and getting (nearly) enough sleep! On top of that, Adams (and Giordano) began Continuity Associates in 1971, an advertising agency in NYC (and eventually LA) which operated for over 50 years until his passing in 2022.
Neal Adams was not only a top talent in the silver and bronze age of comics, he was indefatigable and prolific.
It is obvious why this was such an acclaimed series when it was first released and why it has been re-released several times. Highly recommended.
Green Arrow and Green Lantern make up one of the greatest duo's in comic history. Right up there with Batman and Superman. This collection has them tackling all the heavy issues like drugs, politics, race, ect. and it's a fantastic read. I highly suggest it to any fan of Oliver Queen or Hal Jordan. It's a great starting point if you are getting into either superhero.
This newest reprint combines both volumes in one, which is all to the good, but does not contain the prefaces of either man. Now maybe that's for the best. In his first preface, O'Neill said he really thought the stories should just stand on their own and be embraced or rejected as the read sees fit. Oh, but O'Neill has such a great personality. His editorials in the back of Batman comics in the 80's were wonderful, and his memories in those prefaces for the earlier collections are wonderful, and it's a shame that they are no longer there. In comic book history, O'Neill is on the side of the angels. Words from him are always worth reading.
I give this item only three stars in part because I'm ambivalent about the quality of material (Adams' work is gorgeous and O'Neill had great ideals, but the stories as executed are ultimately pretty flawed). I will never stop praising their historic importance. But mostly I gave only three stars because I think the prefaces of both O'Neil and Giordano should be there, and that until a new "all in one volume" collection comes along that reprints them, buyers should pick up a used copy of the 2000 two-volume reprint.

"Easy, you've no cause to yell at me! I have a job...I do it!" verteidigt sich GL gegen die entsprechenden Vorwurfe von GA, und der kontert:
"Seems I've heard that line before...at the Nazi war trials!"
