Product Description

A newly discovered bamboo with new culms (stems) that have attractive rusty reddish sheaths and a non-invasive root system. This introduction is proving to be one of the most hardy and versatile clumping bamboo in the landscape. It is a shorter bamboo, only about 10 feet tall when mature, but a vigorous grower, sending up many new culms each season. The new culms of this bamboo leaf out early in the summer, making it an excellent choice where its rapid growth is desired.

If you have never owned a bamboo plant I would recommend this plant. Live plants do not come much cheaper. I received my plant in a box filled with packing peanuts and it was in a pot about 4"x4"x4". The culms where about 12" as some were folded near the top of the box. As soon as I received it I transplanted it. Originally there were 30-40 very thin culms. Many were about as thick as pencil lead in a mechanical pencil, all of those smaller ones died in the transplant but the ones that were about the diameter of a wood match survived. There are about 10 culms right now and it is sending up new shoots already.

This is a clumping bamboo and will not spread as rapidly as running bamboos. The only issue when planting this you should not plant it right next to a foundation wall or driveway. The root system grows in a small area but it dense and powerful. It will push through a foundation wall or damage a driveway if planted next to it. Other than that plant it anywhere, it is an amazing plant.
If you don't know much about bamboo or are scared to plant it because of stories you've heard you should do more research. Just do a search for running vs clumping bamboo. Or look at a bamboo nurseries website.

I have 6 plants currently in my yard just north of Boston. They were covered under five feet of snow since Christmas, but the snow is melting and they are springing up good as new. They grow fast, tolerate a little or a lot of sunlight and they shoot like crazy. In the end, they should be 5-7 feet in diameter and 10 feet tall, perfect for a nice hedge or single specimin.

I'll be buying several more of these plants and growing them indoors in larger pots (6-8 inch)for about a year and then putting them in the ground next spring!

I was expecting to have much less of the bamboo in the pot. Good quality, sturdy plant arrived very quick. Plant was alive and looked healthy. I purchased this one for the outside planting. Now it is in the pot outside with 0F and still staying green and multiplying. Not too invasive.

I am rating this with a 3 star for the timely deliver and packing of the product. With that being said I am not quite happy with the plant I received. It had more dried leaves and stems than green ones. Additionally, the plant is 10x taller than the advertise photo. I will post my pictures from the day one to after replanting to a new pot. I have purchased many other plants from this seller and will have to say that they stand behind their product. So, I will give it this plant a couple of weeks.

I was incredibly impressed by everything about this transaction, and couldn't recommend this bamboo and Hirt's more. The plant was well-packaged, just as pictured, shipped quickly, with minimal travel damage. Being bamboo, of course, the stuff is hardier as nails, but I've ordered hardy plants from other websites that arrived looking like they were packed with all the loving care of used coffee filters, and shipped through a demilitarized zone. So I think it's worth mentioning that this bamboo arrived in such great shape. Also, there was a really good amount of growth in the pot--chock full, actually. It was so full of roots, it immediately needed a bigger container! I've been cultivating in inside, for now, and it's doing very well. Very impressive! Again, both the product and the seller! Thanks, Hirt's Gardens!

Plants were healthy when they arrived and worked perfectly for their intended purpose, a 10 year old's science fair project. After repotting in 5 gal planters, we left one outside, pulling it into the garage when temps were below freezing, and it stayed dormant but healthy. We simulated the natural environment indigenous to green panda with the other plant and it showed growth of 6 inches in three weeks with baby shoots coming up and growing as much as 10 inches in that amount of time. They are extraordinarily hardy, as I kill house plants like it's a talent, but both of these are living and doing well six weeks later. I found it difficult to find information on caring for the plant, perhaps because it's "newly discovered" or perhaps because I don't know how to search but I highly doubt it's the latter. What I did to keep these alive: water a little when leaves start to curl, they don't like to be over watered but they don't like to be dried out by say winds or cold, dry air we have in NC in the late fall/winter. They need good drainage and enriched soil. The leaves that fall off provide nutrients and warmth to the soil. The indoor plant received the spa treatment with inexpensive grow lights and a steamy room made possible by leaving the lid open on the washing machine and filling it with hot water. They like partial shade, they like partial sun, don't let them dry out, don't water them too much--what I did find was a lot of contradictory information so I just shared with you what we did to see that amount of growth, hope it's helpful. My son won the science fair so that's really cool.

When I got the plants in the mail, I was somewhat disappointed by the size based on the price which was 9.99 for each pot plus shipping. The height was only about 4 1/2 inches total including the pot height. I have ordered bamboo from one other site located in Oregon through Amazon. While I paid a just a little more for those plants, they were almost 4 feet tall and ready to go in the ground, and they are thriving. Compare that to the smaller pair that have to stay inside as yet so the rabbits don't eat them. I guess it all depends on what you budget is.
