Deep down in the ocean, strange things happen, acts of love that are unfamiliar to the human eye: Anchovies mate in large orgies; shrimp strip down to get in the mood; starfish can do it two different ways; whales fight to make love.
Inspired by the wonderfully odd and humorous short films created by Isabella Rossellini and released on DVD for the first time, Green Porno offers a visually arresting and scientifically accurate look at the sex lives of marine animals and other creatures. This book will make you see the animal kingdom as you never have before.

About the Author
Isabella graced the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Vanity Fair, becoming one of the most iconic models of the 1980s. Her acting career includes such films as David Lynch's Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci's Big Night, Peter Weir's Fearless, and The Saddest Music in the World directed by Guy Maddin. Isabella wrote the script to My Dad is 100 Years Old, also directed by Guy Maddin, an homage to her father, the filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, and her mother, Ingrid Bergman. Green Porno is Isabella's directorial debut. She lives in New York City.

Although the DVD is toted as an additional feature of the book, I consider the writings secondary to the short films themselves. The stills, however, further fuel the argument that Isabella could land a Lancôme contract even at her current age. In any event, "Green Porno" is a true erotic education from earthworm to whale, and one would be amiss to overlook the sexual artistry.
I haven't watched the DVD that comes with it yet. I like Isabella Rossellini though, so to me it was a good buy.
Since you're still with me, this offers a charming introduction to a few species, familiar and unfamiliar. The presentation involves simple puppetry (often just paper cutouts), and even simpler costuming. Each of the book's sections take just a few pages, reflecting the few-minute format of each video it represents. There's a bit of eco-message in some of these piece, but not many, and not nearly as shrill as one might fear. Mostly, it just delights in the wonderful lives of our fellow beings, and in how their lives differ so very much from our own. And, within the limits of the format, this presents some good, solid science. My only regret in Rossellini's presentation is that there aren't more of her with more different interests.
As much as I like this book, it's just a shadow of Rossellini's videos. They're available on-line (and in the book's enclosed DVD), and are truly charming.Highly recommended for anyone, especially with kids, as long as everyone's comfortable with the boy-girl thing.

The book is adorable, but the accompanying DVD is the icing in the cake. Artistry, puppetry, and a little insanity make for good entertainment.Published on February 17, 2013 by T. Mathis
