I have a very active family of 4 - we hike, fish, do yard work, have 2 gardens, are complete DIY home improvement junkies and also have 2 dogs and a cat...We get messy, dirty and covered in pet hair. Daily.
I have an HE top loading washing machine. I follow the instructions - let the water start, add the SMALL amount Green Shield then put clothes/sheets/ pet beds etc. in without crowding the machine. I use All Fresh washing machine cleaner monthly as well. It is also rated A on the EWG.
I bought this massive bottle in March and have just run out in June! 2-3 loads a day for nearly 3 months breaks down to very little money per wash. I am VERY particular about sorting, washing and drying clothes.
1/2 cup of oganic apple cider vinegar In the wash kills odors and bacteria and also softens naturally.
1/2 cup of white vinegar helps with whitening and also softens. I'm fairly certain that it kills bacteria, but I stick with apple cider for that.
Add 1/2 cup baking soda for whitening, odors and softening works, too.
In answer to the chunky aspect of this detergent- it's organic, for one, so there's no harmful chemicals to keep it from forming globs after a while AND it's concentrated - only a cap full is needed.
Honestly, the bottle is so huge that I pour some into another lidded container for everyday use and store the big bottle. I measure the proper amount with another cap small cap of the equivalent stated for Green Shield. I hang dry most everything indoors or outdoors except for towels and our jeans. We don't have crunchy undies and bras, btw. We wear Exofficio, Me Undies and Bamboo. Hang drying is the way to go. Wool dryer balls with a few drops of a clear essential oil are awesome in the dryer and cut down on static (as does vinegar) and cost.
No, this is not a miracle detergent. Big name brands will give you the sense of truly clean with their toxic chemicals. Chemicals which are skin and airway irritants, hormone disruptive, cancerous, organ damaging and environmentally harmful aren't worth it, in my personal opinion. I cannot speak for anyone else.
Why do I order this from Amazon? First, it's convenient and tax-free - I have Multiple Sclerosis and my time, energy levels and budget are better spent this way for this type of product. I love the outdoors and staying as gealthy as posdible. Secondly, for the cost to wash my family's clothes and other things for almost 3 MONTHS with one jug of this and to have a piece of mind, it's totally worth it.
I have absolutely no reservations in recommending this this detergent. I was NOT offered any incentive or free product for my honest, but long, review. I hope you find it helpful and not annoying or preachy.
"Biokleen Bac-Out Stain+Odor Remover" for when the detergent isn't enough and I would recommend the same to others. Even though I wish this were cheaper, the nice thing is that you don't have to use very much detergent, and you can use even less if you have one of those fancy eco-friendly washers.
