I have celiac disease, and so the grass-pollinating season presents a difficulty for me. Celiacs have problems with all plants in the grass (Poaceae) family, which includes wheat, rye, oats, corn, barley, sorghum, triticale, kamut, wild rice, etc. While we can get away with eating a little corn or sorghum once in a blue moon if grass isn't pollinating outdoors, that is not the case when those little pollens are airborne! The symptoms not only include allergic reactions in the sinuses, asthma, and sore throats; but with some cereal grains, it also includes rheumatoid pains in the joints, high blood pressure, and other autoimmune diseases.
Not only celiacs, but also allergy sufferers cannot "go raw" during the seasons when certain plants are pollinating (unless they enjoy being sick). For celiacs, that means grass-pollinating season; and for others, that means the pollinating season for trees like birch or alder, or weeds like mugwort and ragweed. There are many cross-reactions during those seasons that make it almost impossible to eat a raw diet, and not even all cooked fruits and vegetables are free from causing symptoms of oral allergy syndrome (sometimes called pollen-food allergy syndrome). Added to that are the cross-reactions of people who are allergic to latex, which put avocado, apricot, papaya, pineapple, melon, grapes, mangos, peaches, bananas, kiwi, celery, spinach, tomato, and sunflower seeds on the potential reaction list -- especially when eaten raw. Nuts can also cause allergic symptoms. During certain times of the year, though, I can eat raw foods -- after freeze-up and before the spring thaw in Alaska. (Use a search engine to find oral allergy syndrome or pollen-food allergy) What a delight it is to be able to go raw when I am able!
It would be good if Mrs. Boutenko could include information on oral food allergies in her presentations so that her audience is reassured they can probably return to the much-enjoyed raw food (that tastes better than anything cooked!)in the seasons of the year when they are not bothered by cross-reactions to certain fruits, vegetables, and spices. There are charts, by the way, of which plants are affected by specific pollens for folks with OAS. I understand a significant percentage of allergy-sufferers have this cross-reactive problem.
Good health!
I do like how it explains the do's and don'ts of blending and what goes together and i like that it contained a lot of recipes. Most recipes, however require dandeliions which are not easy to find for me in my hometown...i'm sure they are around places, but i don't know much about how to best handle them. Excuse my ignorance with wild plants, but i didn't want to confuse it with different plants that should not be made for consumption.
I do have a lot of kale and spinach available however and have enjoyed some of the recipes. The only other thing i found a bit hard was that sometimes it measures spinach , for example, by cups or kale as well and then in other recipes it calls for number of the leaves. I don't know how to maesure kale and collard greens by cups except i chop them up, So, i improvise and eventually i just started making my own blends because i got tired of looking up a recipe each morning. I don't always have all ingredients available to me, so i just try to go with some basic ingredients that are available to me.
My favorite recipe so far was the one that called for 2 c of orange juice with some frozen blueberries and strawberries and then your spinach and one banana. It has been my favorite and i tried it with kale and other greens too and it's pretty darn good.
I wish it had more images of the different examples of smoothies or of some of the greens mentioned though.

Nonetheless it was Victoria who did the research, worked out the formula (fruit + greens) and sequestered the technology and put the word out! This book is an updated reworking of her classic, with plenty of recipes as well as the background and context to her work. Nicely presented including family photos.
If you are into GS for holistic lifestyle change and are interested in the broader health transformation or an interest in raw food culture beyond Insta-stories and Acai bowls - then this is for you!
Recommend this to those who are interested in smoothies for health.

Now I understand more how to combine the fruits and greens, how important it is to rotate the greens (any why).
So, I am considering getting more books written by Victoria Boutenko (I like her style).

Simple.
Delicious.
We are lucky to live in an age where technology provides blenders that produce such healthy and tasty results so simply from raw ingredients.
One suggestion. The book recommends a VitaMix blender. These cost around £500.
The Magi mix 11610 is much cheaper, robust and does the job.
