Top customer reviews
I haven't used a chain saw in several years, but used gasoline powered ones often in my youth. I am also an engineer with a habit of noticing subtle design details.
I put this saw immediately to work on some large oak limbs the moment it arrived. It did the job. The motor was more than adequate for cutting oak limbs the full diameter of the 16-inch blade. I also like that the chain tensioning system requires no tools.
However, this saw does have some shortcomings.
The oil cap is held captive with a string tether, but it pulled off the first time I removed the cap. It popped back on but it is definitely not a secure design. It also gets in the way when replacing the oil cap. A chain like the kind that keeps bank pens secure would have been a better choice here..
The chain slipped off twice in the fist half-hour of use. I'll chalk that up to me being unfamiliar with the correct chain tightness.
The hand guard in front of the forward handle is very easily mistaken for the handle itself. I caught myself grabbing it instead of the real handle several times. A safer design would have omitted the slots on the guard so it is less likely to be mistaken for a handle.
The forward handle does not allow you to align your hand with the center of the bar. It must always be to the side. This means you cannot apply balanced force to the bar when sawing. This lead to fatigue and crooked cuts on larger limbs.
The extension cord capture clip is too small for larger gauge cords, and the plug frequently unplugs for the extension cord, even after securing the cord to the saw by other means. There should be some sort of capture mechanism to minimize this happening (this is a common flaw on corded tools, I have noticed).
The bar clamp wing nut that keeps the bar tight after chain tension adjustment loosened several times during use.
Finally, the saw seems to leak bar oil readily when not in use.
UPDATE: I originally posted I had purchased a lawn mower of this same brand previously. I was mistaken. The lawn mower brand was Earthwise, not GreenWorks.
The practical use was impressive good and I can recommend this chainsaw very much.
I apologize for your experience with the chain tension mechanism. You may need to remove the chain cover to ensure the chain tension block is located in the tensioning hole on the chain bar. And that the rubber block and chain bar are free from oil as it helps to keep tension on the chain.
Here is a video on how to remove and replace the chain for our 9amp model. This model has the same chain tension mechanism as the 12 amp model 20232.
We also have a chain tension guide available, please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for further assistance.
