The tools are as pictured, though the insert in my box was plastic instead of foam. The instructions are easy to follow and it does work.
The stripper does ok for Dual RG6 but has trouble with RG6 Quadshield. It does a sloppy job on the center wrap in QS and the blade has been visibly damaged after only a few cuts. The blade is removable, I assume it can be replaced, so I won't hold this against the tool.
The cable cutters work but the cutting edges were chewed up after only a few cuts. I can actually feel a bump on the blade jump past as I close the jaws. Please note I only used these to cut Coax cable, and I did not abuse them. In theory they could be sharpened but they will never hold an edge because the metal is too soft.
The crimper seems works well enough. Some crimps were looser then I would like them but I don't believe this is the fault of the tool.
To find out if the loose crimp was from the tool I performed a quick test. I slipped a small machine screw nut inside the coax head as crimped it. The machine screw nut acted as a spacer to allow me to effectively get a longer compression stroke and apply more force. (Do this at your own risk.)
This did not improve the tightness of the crimp so I concluded the looseness is not the fault tool. The looseness seems to come from the wire diameter. All the bulk spool RG6 I have encountered so far is between 260 and .285” and it crimped good and tight. But some RG6 cable I bought retail with preformed ends on them is about .252” diameter, and it crimped a little loose. I found F-type twist on connectors worked much better for the .252” diameter cable.
Why four stars?
The tool got the job done but I'm not really happy with it. The cutters are sub-par and the stripper feels cheap. For the money it's a fair value but there are better tools out there.
In the end I would recommend it for occasional hobby type use if you can get it at a fair price, but I would NOT recommend it for professional use at any price.
One last thought: anyone looking at this kit should also consider the Klein Tools VDV002-818.
I couldn't really ask for more at such a great price. I recommend this kit.
