This epistolary novel, written in lucid prose with tender and poignant portraits of a father, mother and son, is both poetic and philosophical in its reach and depth. I would be hard-pressed to name which one of these stunningly crafted family figures touched me the most. As I moved through the chapters and felt the emotional pulse of each personality, I would think 'Yes, that one is the most extraordinary!' Then, I'd continue reading, and think 'No, it must be him....it must be her!' The answer is, the most extraordinary player here must be the author himself, Richard Hawley, who by some form of literary alchemy has managed, through diary entries, to bring this cast of characters to such vivid life they must remain in the reader's mind as family friends - so embedded have they become in our own psyches and souls. This novel, along with its companions – The Headmaster’s Papers and The Headmaster’s Wife, form a triptych within American literature that will live on for years to come. Highly recommended.
