I researched this pack online and watching YouTube videos. I ordered it specifically because it opens up and sort of acts like a suitcase. Simplicity is key with this pack. I am only using it for travel. I do not hike or camp.
I packed it to the max, using packing cubes, and still had room for my light leather boots in the shoe bag compartment. I found this impressive.
It IS TSA-friendly. However, prepare for some carriers to ask you to weigh it. I always forget that part. If it is too heavy, you might have to pay extra. Mine was heavy, but it was still within parameters.
Perhaps if you don't pack it to the max, your shoulders will stay cool on the straps and your back will stay cool on the back panel, but mine didn't. Mine sweated while walking through the airport. No big deal, though. It wasn't terrible or anything. Again, mine was packed very heavy.
If I look for another pack in the future, I will probably first look at the bigger version of the Gregory Compass Daypack series. An excellent purchase :)
I've owned Gregory packs in the past, and they always seemed quality built, and very durable material that's lasted many years (the hiking backpack I owned was great - but the pack was too heavy, weighing in nearly 5 pounds). I'm disappointed that this pack design is so simplistic, when it would have been easy to at least include a couple of nylon loops on the exterior, and some organizer pockets in the top compartment - I don't think any consumers would complain about those additions.
If you're curious, I ended up buying and testing several backpacks (Gregory, Osprey, eBags, Redwing, North Face). The best of the lot was the North Face Compass 40 (not currently available through Amazon) - it's an excellent travel pack that works as a carry on for most airlines.
