Product Description

The
GP ballhead has all the benefits and features of our GV2 ballhead, including the ability to function as a gimbal head and it weighs only 1 lb (454g), but what really sets the GP apart from all our other ballheads is that it is also designed to be used upside down, allowing the ball to be used as a leveling base for stitched panoramic images. Even when using your tripod on rocky, uneven terrain the GP Ballhead allows you to pan parallel to the horizon, eliminating the need to carry a separate leveling base to create accurate panoramic images.

This ballhead includes a quick release clamp with either our double speed rubber knob or our new locking lever. It also includes a large bulls eye level and detent pin.

I've tried some of the best ball heads, including two versions of the Arca-Swiss p0 Monoball, the Leofoto LH-55 and the Sirui K-40X and this Acratech GP is the best in every way. I'll compare it to the Arca-Swiss Monoball because it is closest in function and price.

What I find really exceptional on the Acratech GP is the flip-lock lever clamp. Unlike the Arca-Swiss Monoball, it is easily adjustable for variations in plate sizes from different manufacturers. Once adjusted the clamp holds the camera firmly without any worry of slippage. The Arca-Swiss Monoball with lever clamp is very difficult to adjust, a real pain in the finger.

The Acratech has an "open ball" design that doesn't require lubrication whereas the Arca-Swiss has a traditional ball setting; one of the Arca-Swiss Monoballs I owned was leaking a light oil lubricant that was annoying as it got on my hands during a shoot. The Acratech is easy to clean and keep clean compared to more traditional designs.

Turning the Acratech upside down for panoramic shooting makes it the equivalent of the Arca-Swiss Monoball that comes with the ball on the bottom not on the top. I love that design and with the Acratech in that configuration shooting panos are easy. I see no reason to not leave it in the upside-down position for general shooting like the Arca-Swiss.

While the Arca-Swiss has a very innovative ball-locking system utilizing a ring around the ballhead instead of a knob I find the Acratech's knob system and friction control easier to use. The knobs have a nice rubber coat and are comfortable in the hand and big enough to use with gloves on.

Both ball heads are very well-made and are durable enough for a broad range of shooting conditions. One big advantage the Arca-Swiss p0 has over the Acratech GP is its compact size. The Arca-Swiss is perfect for smaller, lighter tripods that fold up with legs flipped 180°. One other advantage the Arca has is it is somewhat less expensive, $372 for Arca with lever clamp versus $429 for the Acratech with lever clamp. Still, I think the Acratech is a better value and overall better ball head. My recommendation is to try it and see for yourself. The lever clamp is well-worth the additional price.

First off, do not take my 4-star rating the wrong way. It is an outstanding ballhead with some great features. However, there are a couple of minor issues in my mind that keep this from being a perfect ballhead (or a 5-star rating).

I shoot with a Nikon D850 with a grip and L-bracket with lens ranging from a Tamron 45mm (I think my lightest lens) to Nikon 500mm f4 FL (I thing my heaviest lens) on the Acratech GP ballhead with lever clamp in all kinds of conditions for the past year or so. This ballhead does a very good job of keeping the setup stead.

    Issues with the ballhead:
    1) It has a rather small, wimpy main tension knob. When using my heavier lenses, I have to really torque on the knob to keep the setup from slowly settling down. I frequently feel like I could twist the knob off from the feel of it. I have not twisted the knob off, mind you. But, it does not instill confidence, like the knobs on the RRS ballheads.
    2) The gimbal setup is only as good as the tripod being used. Reason being, when using the gimbal setup, the camera/lens sit primarily over two legs of the tripod. It is because in the gimbal setup, it shifts the camera/lens off to the side (a traditional gimbal setup keeps the weight of the camera/lens over the center of the tripod). If one has a narrow stance to his/her tripod and using a heavy lens, it would be very easy for that expensive setup to tumble to the side. I wouldn't dare mount my expensive 500mm lens to it in the gimbal setting (and granted its only rated to a 400mm lens). So, be warned. It does a great job with my lesser lenses in the gimbal setting, but how often does one need a gimbal setup with a lesser lens?

    Benefits of the ballhead:
    1) Overall, it is solid construction. The ballhead moves smoothly without lubrication. When it's tightened down good, it is rock solid.
    2) The "click". I absolutely love the locking mechanism of the lever clamp. I've had a camera tumble off from its ballhead into a creek once, when I thought the camera was secured to the ballhead. That precipitated the purchase of this ballhead. One has confidence that his/her camera is secured to the ballhead when one hears the "click" of the locking mechanism. That camera isn't going anywhere. Love it!!!
    3) The panoramic leveling setup. This really works well. It takes a little time, and requires an Allen wrench to convert the ballhead into the setup as instructed. However, once setup, it does a fantastic job of leveling for panoramas.
    4) Durability. I have had this ballhead out in the desert under intense sun and 90+ degrees F. I have had it out in -26 degrees F shooting the lunar eclipse. I've dragged it up mountains and through swamps. Dust the thing off, and it looks as good now, as the day I bought it.
    5) Weight. I would say that the weight of the ballhead is comparable to others on the market or better. I have a Manfrotto ballhead that I use periodically that is substantially heavier.
    6) Size. It's not too large or small on my Manfrotto tripod. I'd say that it is easier to pack than many out there.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase of the Acratech GP Ballhead with lever clamp. I'm disappointed with the gimbal setup for my needs. And I really wish that they had a beefer main knob. But, I LOVE having the confidence that my expensive setup isn't likely to meet its doom in a creek after I hear that "click" from the locking mechanism. The panoramic leveling feature is unique, and works great! I feel that this ballhead will be with me for many years to come.

This ball head is fantastic. The lever operates smoothly and I really like the adjustable clamp which allows you to dial in the correct pressure which accommodates slight differences between base plates of different manufacturers. It doesn't take much pressure to get the ball to lock down and operation is simple and smooth. The build quality is top-notch. There's no confusing the different knobs for their purpose and the minimal number of them makes operation that much simpler. The 90 degree notch is 90 degrees. No way to screw it up when you want to flip it over and shoot quickly. It is entirely devoid of useless or pointlessly large handles and other junk protruding in every direction like many other ball heads that try very hard to be the jack of all trades. Everything is placed for a very natural feel. Easy and quick to manipulate and just gets out of the way. Excellent ball head and worth every penny.
