Jim Curtis has done it again. The book arrived Wednesday late afternoon and I finished it late Thursday evening. It's really hard to put down once begun because it is a gripping tale that is so well told. The characters seem very real and the storyline is absolutely believable.
Those who unfortunately haven't read the previous volumes will know all they need to know by page 37. The catch-up is nicely done and doesn't get in the way of the experienced Grey Man reader. It also doesn't give away the previous volumes in such a way as to stop one from going back and reading those previous two volumes, which I highly recommend.
There are several family gathering scenes where I marvel at how well the author paints the picture, delivers the dialogue, and manages to keep accurate track of everyone and everything. As the reader it was easy for me, but it's rather like watching a complicated piece of machinery at work, easy to appreciate the result, but a marvel when considering what it took to conceive of it, engineer the bits and pieces, and assemble them into a productive, functional end result. I like the high detail of Tom Clancy and Jim Curtis delivers a shade less but weaves it in exceptionally well for me.
For anyone planning to write multiple volumes it must be tough deciding how to construct the ending(s). I found each of the volumes had a solid ending, yet the door was open, even somewhat teasingly so, for yet another volume.
Well, I'm waiting now for volume four and I sincerely regret that the author has a full life and a very much full-time job, otherwise I'd be beating down his door demanding Volume 4 by Monday.
He who stand with me..
This is a book that will be appropriate for young adults through senior citizens, and will make excellent entertainment for the beach or next to the campfire. If you enjoyed the other two books in the series, you’re sure to like this installment.
Note - I was a beta reader for Mr. Curtis on this project, but bought my own copy after publication.
I'm just a few years younger than the old man and certainly don't have his experiences or skills, but I have several friends with at least bits and pieces of each. None of them are as hard core as John Cronin, but there is enough overlap that he is a believable character, I also have a daughter who is just a few years older than his granddaughter. Add in a few recent combat veteran friends and acquaintances as well as a few in law enforcement,. The cast of characters is mostly people to whom I can definitely relate
I would recommend this book and the whole series to anyone who enjoys either contemporary thrillers or more intimate character driven stories. This offers a very nice blend of both. It might be best to start with the first book in the series, but wherever you start, you will probably want to read the rest.
