‘An intriguing contemporary YA fantasy. Featuring “mysterious” gypsy groups and their folklore and traditions, I found this aspect of the book gave it a refreshingly uniqueness I don't see too much in other books in this genre … Consider me hooked on The Romany Outcasts Series by Christi J. Whitney. Is book two available soon?’ Reader Girls
About the Author
Christi J. Whitney is a former high school teacher with a love for the dramatic. She lives just outside Atlanta with her husband and two sons. When not spending time with them or taking a ridiculous number of trips to Disney World, she is usually directing plays, geeking out over Doctor Who, making costumes for sci-fi/fantasy conventions, watching superhero movies, or pretending she's a tad bit British. I really can't wait for book 2 to see how the unique fantasy element of this story is developed.
Speaking of characters, there are a lot of great ones! Katie, Sebastian's best friend, is one of my favorites. I don't want to give anything away, but there was a moment with her that brought me to tears. It wasn't a long moment, it was just so real and important. Ms. Lucian, the drama teacher, is also amazing! Sebastian's group of friends are just real and the relationships so honest to real life. Sebastian's brother, Hugo, is someone I loved even when I was mad at him. Each character really spoke to me in this book. They each had a real purpose and seemed completely fleshed out, even if their part was small.
I love a book that gives me vibrant images without having to describe the moss on the tree for three paragraphs. Grey does that perfectly! My imagination could see it all, but at no point was I bored with the descriptions. Christi Whitney gives just the right mixture of description, dialogue, and internal musings of the main character.
I loved it and absolutely cannot wait for the 2nd book!!!
Loved the premise and the amazing world of gypsies and secrets Ms. Whitney created. With a lyrical feel to the prose, lots of action, suspense and teenage snark, this is a fabulous story to get lost in. I look forward to the next book in the Romany Outcasts series.
