Marc Streitenfeld is by far one of the most talented young composers working today. He took over Hans Zimmer's spot as Ridley Scott's go to composer, and in fact has worked with Ridley Scott on every single score he's ever composed. His only other non Ridley Scott directed film besides The Grey was Welcome To The Riley's, which was directed by Ridley's son Jake Scott. Ridley Scott did produce Welcome To The Riley's and he and Tony also produced The Grey, which is why Marc is scoring here. For The Grey we get a very somber score with beautiful execution.
The music evokes a sense of isolation, but a sense of loss and dread as well. Streitenfeld's signature sounding strings paint a pessimistic mood that slowly changes into impending danger. Once the wolves are introduced we get some very awesome tension building music. This isn't run of the mill horror stuff here, but instead the music bends and flows to craft some hair raising moments. In the track "Wife Memory" we hear a piano echoing the main motif very gently. The music becomes contemplative and aware of the situation of the characters. We feel the stillness and we feel the racing thoughts. Where the score goes for the second half is extremely dark. Not only do the wolves play into the danger within the music, but overall the music is emotionally dark. The atmospheric harshness of the score becomes unsettling in "Lagging Behind" and it's a great tension track that makes me wish Prometheus would get here sooner. The final few minutes of the score are haunting, and I mean very chillingly beautiful pieces of music. They close out what is a very tense and brooding experience.
The Grey is the first great score of 2012, and when I say great I mean great. This is a simple score done with perfection. The emotion is straight forward and shoots straight to the gut. This is the polar opposite of what Jerry Goldsmith did in The Edge. We don't appreciate the grandness of the wild here, we fear the harshness of it. It's an existential thought on our own existence as we go into the fray. Marc Streitenfeld has displayed some great pieces here that make me eagerly anticipate what he has in store for us with Ridley Scott's Prometheus. The Grey is a fantastic experience that won't brighten up your day, but it's a simple score with a profound deepness.

Marc Streitenfeld's soundtrack for the film, The Grey, worth hearing in its own right, whether you saw the movie or not. If you did see the movie, then you know how well it fit, evoking an atmosphere of winter, wilderness and isolation. And on occasion being hunted by wolves. But it also fits the themes of introspection, of being haunted by memories that come back to you when you're alone and thinking back on your life. Streitenfeld's use of strings and high-pitched lingering notes capture the crisp and brittle feel of landscapes of snow and ice, of air so cold its sharpness takes your breath away, of moving through eeriely silent trees in the heart of a great remote wilderness in winter, in which, in spite of your isolation, you are not alone.
Highly recommended for anyone who liked the film, for anyone who likes Streitenfeld's musical style, and for anyone who just likes to have something pensively atmospheric to listen to in the background.

The soundtrack fits perfectly with the movie itself as it is very bleak and spare, just like the setting of the movie. It is a lonely, desolate but powerful score.
I actually sought out this score because of the music in the final scene, which is not on this album. I did locate the album on which it can be found (Ink The Complete Soundtrack) and ended up purchasing both it and this score. I listen to them either consecutively or at the same time but with the songs on random. They compliment each other very well and many times it is hard to tell which score is which, though listening to them separately they feel more independent of each other.
Listening to the samples gives a very good indication of what you can expect over the entire soundtrack. If the samples are not enough to convince you, then this is not the soundtrack for you.

Marc Streitenfeld's soundtrack for The Grey adds an underlying emotional layer to a film
about a man named Ottway who is haunted by the memory of his wife. The score, like the relentless cold in Alaska, takes on a character all its own and provides and emotional warmth to the bitter and desperate situation experienced by the main character.
The music takes us into the psyche of Ottway as he struggles both mentally and physically in the Alaskan wilderness as the hired protector of oil company employees working on a pipeline. Finally, Streitenfeld's haunting music accompanies Ottway as he and the men he has sworn to protect crash in the remote Alaskan wilderness where they struggle to survive.

This album does a powerful job of drawing a person into existential reflection on their life and personal journey. The movie, The Grey, really brought the audience face to face with the question of death, and this album beautifully keeps in step with that theme.
My two favorite songs are "Suicide" and "You Are Gonna Die", which at first glance, may sound really depressing, but for anyone who has felt the brokenness and pain of this life, they will find much to resonate with in these songs, and the album as a whole.

The song that a lot of people seem to be searching for is actually NOT on this soundtrack. It's the song played right before the end when he is about to fight the Alpha. It's called "The City Surf" by Janin Winans from the Ink (2009) Soundtrack.
Ink The Complete Soundtrack
. Regardless The Grey soundtrack is still great.

If you've seen the movie you know the general tone of the music and all that's associated with the film. Like the film the music is somber and sad, but ultimately very good. Only complaint would be that it's a bit short as an album at around 40 minutes or so with many tracks being 2 minutes or less.

Great movie with an outstanding soundtrack. It is too bad "The City Surf" borrowed from the movie "Ink" isn't on here ( it is the theme in the final scene where Ottway prepares to fight the Alpha wolf) but overall a well written soundtrack.

Haunting Score

The music from this film is very subtle and beautiful. It's quite a short piece of work but well worth having, nonetheless. The music stays with you long after the cd has finished playing. One of my favorite scores.

Die Musik zum Film
Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on June 13, 2016
