When I opened the box of these two kitchen spatulas, my wife remarked that they looked not yet ready to leave the factory - awkward square edge handles felt uncomfortable, metal edges rough but sharp enough to cut a careless cook, deadly sharp corners on the front edges.But I saw professional grade materials and design: the same steel and plastic construction you find in most any commercial kitchen, tightly fitted handles, sturdy blades for lifting and scraping rather than the slender flexible stainless turning spatula with shrinking wooden handle cheeks which my wife has been using for fifty years.Twenty minutes with a small electric sander and a fine flat file re-profiled both these into tools (see my picture) exactly as I needed.The solid spatula has just shoveled finely chopped carrots, onions, celery, and garlic into fresh chicken soup I’m making. The flat wide blade with a straight front edge is perfect for quickly loading each ingredient from cutting board to pot without chasing loose carrot slices around the house.When I ordered this pair I couldn’t figure a use for the second spatula with holes. Fresh fruit lunch made that clear. First I sectioned several navel oranges - they peel so easily - and cut each section into bite sized pieces. Leaving the orange juice on the cutting board, I then peeled a couple of ripe Manila mangoes, stripped off their sensuous fragment flesh, and sliced it into bites. Now the cutting board was covered with orange and mango bites slithering in their own juices. Aha! That’s what the spatula with holes is for. Since the slippery juice drains as I lift, it takes seconds to get the fruit off the board and into the waiting bowl. Then a banana sliced on the same board soaked up a lot of that flavorful juice - and i was done.So this pair of simple commercial spatulas are a bit clunky, a bit unfinished you might say. But they are great value, easy to improve, and very useful.
