Editorial Reviews
Review
Once encountered, Theodore Dalrymple has become for many of us a shared treasure--the cultured, often mordantly funny social commentator who was for many years a psychiatrist at a British prison. No one else writes so engagingly and so candidly about the world as it is, not as the politically correct would have it be.
-- Charles Murray, author of The Bell Curve and Coming Apart

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2018The book is divided into two sections: the first being bottom-up tales of the foibles of humanity in our modern affluent society, the second top-down stories of some imposing "system" or societal delusion en masse on the common man (I think using more examples of truth in British life than the author may like to admit). All stories carry Dalrymple's dark humor, but remarkably evoke the reader's compassion toward those most innocent (even if they are victims of themselves or their own delusions).
It's serious social commentary underlying the satire, and the themes stay with the reader long after reading. Thank you (again), Mr. Dalrymple.

I liked this book. Maybe a little overwritten, maybe a little too anchored in stereotypes, maybe a little too linear with its narratives, but that's probably part of the appeal. Big words are good, and hard-nosed generalisations are good, in a world gone soft with identity politics and the cult of compassion. One annoying thing, though, is the number of typos - at least one, and usually several, on every page - which was distracting and slightly undermined the quality and flow of the writing. New English Review Press clearly need to sharpen up their act a bit when it comes to quality control, because their paperbacks don't come cheap.

An exceptional read - He truly demonstrates a keen understanding of the human psyche and our troubled nature. Everyone should read this book.
