Ridiculously over-engineered? Or the perfect case no matter where you're headed? We think it's a little bit of both. Simply put, Survivor is the most protective case we've ever built. Designed and tested to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F, Griffin's Survivor Extreme-Duty Case is built from the inside out to protect your iPhone from extreme conditions ... dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration and a host of other environmental factors. Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock-absorbing silicone.

Follow up. After dealing with the poor sound quality for weeks, I finally took the phone out of the case and started to examine the case. There are 2 small pieces of black tape at the bottom of the case which cover the phone's speaker. I took a paper clip and removed them and now the speaker is visible and the sound quality is fine. It was that easy. I'm now a very happy owner of this Iphone 5 case.
Second, this case is advertised as iPhone 5s compatible. It fits the iPhone 5s, but you will NOT be able to use the fingerprint scanner that allows you to bypass entering your pass code (i.e., forget using the Touch ID feature). Haven't tested its "waterproofness," but the case immediately bulked up my iPhone 5s. Not sure if my iPhone is any safer in this case, however.
One of my favorite iPhone cases is the Thule Atmos X3 - and I suspect my iPhone would easily survive a drop in that case, as it would in this case. In other words, I don't think this case adds any more protection, in terms of drops, than the Thule case.
In terms of appearance, its Buzz Lightyear (from Toy Story fame) compared to my other cases. I like that, for as protective as it purports to be, it's relatively easy to put on and off - certainly much easier than the Thule, so it scores higher in that respect.
For the sheer amusement, I'll keep it - but it'll likely be rotated often among my many other cases.
-Fits my iphone 5s perfectly. (A couple reviews I read before buying said that it wasn't possible to charge the phone when the case was on:false. There is a rubber tab that opens easily and doesn't interfere with charging at all.)
-Rubber back and sides. I removed the belt clip as I didn't need it, and I could set it down without worrying about it being knocked or sliding off a table top easily. (This is a reason I prefer this case to Otterbox cases I have had in the past)
-Mostly waterproof. I wouldn't submerge it under water at any means, but while on a mission trip I was caught in the rain a few times and didn't even worry about my phone.
-Close up, it does look cheap. The plastic is not high quality. That being said, I'm very happy with how it looked for how much I paid for the case; I bought this case for the purpose of a mission trip in Central America, so protection and low cost trumped aesthetics for me.
-Wasn't happy with front facing camera quality- like the phone screen, there is a thin layer of plastic overlaying the camera. All my mission trip "selfies" (the kids love them! :) came out unclear and foggy around the edges.
Over all, a great case!! After months of use, it's still in great shape. I'd definitely buy again!
