I originally bought this to use with a Macbook Air since those don't have audio-in jacks, only I rarely use that system. On a lark I plugged it into my notebook running Windows, and discovered Windows 7 detects and uses it with no special drivers or anything. The interface in Windows for swapping input and output devices is super simple.

Now I haven't tried it in XP or Vista. There's a review here saying this doesn't work with Vista...to be honest I'm kind of skeptical about that, as Vista and 7 are basically the same OS, and I'm unaware of any big audio subsystem changes between them. The interface for it is even pretty much identical. XP, I don't know, given there was a major change between how NT 5.x and 6.x handle audio, though I'd suspect it would work as I know XP does handle USB audio devices too.

Regarding audio quality-sounds fine to me. There's some hiss when you crank up the line input far, but that's true of my input jack on my notebooks too. This seems like it might be a slightly cleaner than the built in one. The audio out doesn't sound any better or worse, but hey, that means it works!

At any rate, this seems to work with the newest versions of Windows and OS X, works without special drivers, and is pretty simple to use, so it's probably worth checking out if you need to add a line in and/or out on your computer! :)

I needed a way to record voicemail from my iPhone to my computer. (My father passed away a month prior and I wanted to keep the last messages he had left for me.) My new MacBook Pro does not have an audio in, this allowed me to connect a cable from the headphone jack of the phone into the Griffin, and record via the USB. No setup, just choose the input in the System Preferences. Done and done.

Worked perfectly, even if I never need to use it again, it was more than worth it.

I do a bit of online gaming on my iMac, and needed a device that provided a microphone interface (the iMac I have doesn't have a microphone jack). Pretty much every recommendation I received was to get a USB sound card, and I tried 2 before I settled on this one. The problems with the ones I tried were that after an hour or so, people on ventrilo would complain that my voice sounded robotic and garbled. This would last a minute or so, and then things would go back to normal. After some research, this seemed to be a long known problem on the mac. One of the websites recommended using the iMic, as it was reported not to have this issue. So far, for me, this has been true (maybe around 10 hours online so far, so would assume it would have happened by now).

The sound produced by this device is very clean, and I have no complaints with the quality. I believe it's stereo only, not simulated surround. But it is sufficient for my needs.

I have no idea why the iMic works, and the previous USB sound devices I tried didn't. But that indeed seems to be the case. So if you were having the same problems I was having, you might want to give this device a try.

I got the imic because I needed a cheap way to DJ in software like Ableton (and cheaper alternatives like DJay) without buying a much more expensive interface than those sold by companies like Teac. When DJing one needs two audio outputs, one that is going to the speakers for everyone to dance to and another for the DJ to cue up and beat-match the next track. Of course the problem with a laptop is that it usually only has one audio output. The imic adds a second audio output, allowing me to DJ with very little equipment, just laptop, imic, and headphones, which is very convenient. The audio quality of the imic has always been as good as the two laptops I've used it with and the device has withstood a fair amount of use over the 5 years (yes you are reading that correctly) that I've been using it.

The imic is pretty easy to set up for djing, those it does require a little bit of work. Most audio software I've used will only accept one sound card at a time, that means that you have to find a way to make both outputs (the imic and laptop outputs) run on the same driver. I'm currently running Windows 7 and have found that ASIO4All, a freeware audio driver you can download online, will do just that. Once you have the driver setup it's plug and play every time! I've used this device on Macs as well and there is a similar solution there.

Apparently the device can also be used for audio input using mics, instruments, turntables, etc. I can't speak to the use of the device for those purposes since I do have a more advanced interface that handles that sort of thing so haven't tried using the imic for that purpose (plus all my instrument cables are quarter inch so I would need an adapter to run them into the eighth inch port on the imic. That being said I prefer to use the imic for live purposes like djing because of the very low latency compared to more advanced equipment.

Overall a very good product for the right price.
