Xia is likable, even though she has her fair share of cringeworthy teen girl moments (like telling obvious lies and thinking she's getting away with it, yes, I was a teen girl once too). The romance is sweet and I love that we aren't being bashed over the head with how handsome the love interest is.
My only nitpick would be the fact that Xia seems to know so very little about how to be human. Understandably, she's a young reaper, but it seems that some of the things she questions, like how humans dress, would be things she has seen since she's out in the world reaping every day. But really, it's a small nitpick. Beyond that, you have an interesting new direction for a YA Paranormal Romance. I definitely enjoyed it.
In Grim Crush, S.L. Bynum builds an intriguing world where we get to see a glimpse into the afterlife so to speak where grim reapers are there for every death to help usher the dearly departed into purgatory. Existing outside the human world, Grim Reapers can only be seen by the deceased, unless they show themselves, which would be against rule 3 (Do not show yourself to the living) of the 3 rules all Reapers must follow, so you can imagine Xia’s surprise when a boy named Shilah can see her anyway. Figuring that she’s technically not breaking the rules she befriends Shilah to learn more about what it’s like to be human and why he’s able to see her. Along the way she finds herself breaking rule 2 (Do not become emotionally involved) when she realizes she’s falling in love, a foreign concept to Reapers. But then Death himself finds out and her budding romance with Shilah is tested in the ultimate way forcing Xia to decide whether or not she should, or if she even can, break rule 1 (Do not interfere with someone’s death) no matter what the consequences may be.
I enjoyed this book from start to finish and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I give it 3.5 fangs.
Grim Crush by S. L. Bynum is a stand alone book. I would suggest this book for young adults and adults.
Xia is a young grim reaper. She enjoys helping the dead to pass the time over. There are only three rules that can not be broken. 1. Do not interfere with someone's death. 2. Do not become emotionally involved. 3. Do not show yourself to the living. Unfortunately she has met a boy who can see her and will most likely make her break all three rules.
Shilah is able to see the dead and grim reapers. He never believed it until Xia. Jayza is Xia's best friend and is also a free m reaper. Ziri is a grim reaper in training. Jayza and Ziri will do their best to help Xia with her relationship with Shilah and try to keep her from getting in trouble with Death.
Without giving away any spoilers, if you enjoy sweet YA romance, then you will like this book.
When I read the blurb for this book, I must say I found it to be a very interesting and intriguing concept. We've all heard of *the* Grim Reaper, and from watching Supernatural I understand the idea of multiple reapers quite well, but it was still really neat to see a story from a reaper's POV. The plot itself kept me pulled in from the very start, and the characters were all fun and well-established. The ending was not something I would've called from the halfway point, which is always a plus in my opinion.
All in all, I give this one 4.5 stars, and I'll be starting the sequel as soon as this is posted. =)
