We started reading it straightaway and my children have begged for more until today we sadly finished both Grimble and Grimble at Christmas which were in the same volume. They are devastated that there are no more Grimble books and I know it will be a book we will read and reread.
It is the story of a small boy called Grimble who has two eccentric parents who he spends a lot of time looking after. One morning he wakes up to find that they have left him a note announcing that they have gone to Peru for a week. They leave a series of notes and instructions round the house and a list of people to visit in an emergency. Each chapter takes a day of Grimble's experiences and is very, very funny.
Grimble at Christmas is the story of how, with his parents now safely at home Grimble worries about organising a perfect christmas. He cannot rely on his parents as they are not good with dates and he often has five birthdays in a year but no christmas. He sets about earning enough money to pay for a proper Christmas day. His schemes include making onion fudge, making a toast delivery service and delivering christmas trees.
A fantastic book with excellent illustrations by Quentin Blake. I really hope they reprint it soon.
For a second hand copy printed over 20 years ago and probably once on a child's bookshelf this was in good condition. Well worth the price I paid.
Shame about C.F... :/
Read the book whatever age you are! Would be great to see 'Grimble' available on Kindle!
Would love to know how life went for the young lad now he is about 50.
A film of the books is clearly an oversight! Perhaps Peter Jackson might look into this???
